Description
Title: Portable apparatus for monitoring a body condition
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a portable apparatus for monitoring a body condition and providing information about the monitored condition to the carrier.
Portable heart rate monitors and the like are known which for example, monitor a carrier's heart rate and relay information to a remote receiver where the heart rate is recorded and/or displayed.
Also, portable heart rate monitors are known which are worn on the body and comprise a sensor to sense the heart rate and a separate control device, wired together, the control device simply displaying or recording information from the sensor.
According to a first aspect of the invention I provide a portable apparatus for monitoring a body condition of a carrier comprising transducer means to sense the body condition and provide an input to a control means, and to provide an audible message from a speech synthesising means to the carrier, the message containing information about the sensed body condition.
Thus an athlete and/or patient for examples wearing such an apparatus may continuously be updated about the sensed body condition without having to look at a display.
Most conveniently, the apparatus is miniature and is adapted to be worn on or adjacent to the carrier's ear so as not to interfere in any way with the carrier's activities. For example, the apparatus may comprise a main unit which may contain the control means and the speech synthesizer means, and the transducer means may be connected to the main unit. The apparatus may be self contained having its own battery power supply, although alternatively, the apparatus may be externally powered if convenient.
The apparatus preferably comprises a first transducer means to sense the body condition, and a second transducer means to provide the audible message.
The second transducer means may comprise an ear piece adapted to be received inside or at least near to the ear but alternatively, may comprise a speaker or the like which may in use be located adjacent to the ear.
Further alternatively, the second transducer may be mounted on or in the main unit, there being means to transmit the audible message to the ear of the carrier, such as a tube.
The first transducer means may, in one example, comprise a sensor adapted to be attached to the carrier's ear lobe, but depending upon the nature of the body condition to be monitored, the sensor may be attached to or on the carrier's body elsewhere.
The control means may comprise electronic processing means adapted to receive an input from the first transducer means, and cause the speech synthesising means to generate an appropriate audible message in response.
The speech synthesising means may comprise a memory containing digitalised data generated from an original audio input. The control means may thus select words and/or phrases appropriate to the monitored body condition from the memory.
Alternatively the speech synthesising means may comprise a wholly synthesised speech model, and the control means may thus be operative to synthesise appropriate words and/or phrases using the speech model.
Further alternatively, the speech synthesising means may comprise a recording medium on which words and/or phrases are recorded, the control means being adapted to cause appropriate words and/or phrases to be replayed from the recording medium in response to the input from the first transducer means.
The invention has been developed particularly but not exclusively for an apparatus to monitor the heart rate of the carrier.
Thus the first transducer may comprise for example, a photoplethysmographic or other electro-optical sensor.
However, other suitable transducer means to detect heart beats may be provided, such as for example, pulse oximeter means, or even electrodes of an electrocardiographic device.
The control means may be arranged to determine the instantaneous and/or average heart rate as desired, and the speech synthesising means may be arranged to advise the carrier of his heart rate at set intervals, for example every twenty seconds or so. Preferably, the apparatus is arranged to give an audible alarm message or a simple alarm signal to the carrier in the event that the monitored heart rate falls below or rises above set limits.
It is envisaged that the invention may be applied to the monitoring of other body conditions. For example, using a suitable first transducer means and allied control means, the invention may be applied to the monitoring of the blood pressure of the carrier. Alternatively, the invention may be adapted to monitor the sugar content of the carrier's blood, to alert a diabetic carrier for example, to a low or high blood sugar condition.
The first transducer may particularly in this latter application, be invasive i.e. at least part of the first transducer means may comprise an element inserted into the body, for example into a blood vessel.
Further alternatively, the first transducer means may be arranged to sense brainwaves and thus the apparatus may alert an epileptic carrier to an impending epileptic seizure.
A specific example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which is an illustrative side view of a portable apparatus for monitoring a body condition in accordance with the invention, in use.
Referring to the drawing, a portable apparatus 10 is shown which is adapted to monitor a carrier's heart rate and provide an audible message to the carrier.
The carrier may be a person exercising, such as an athlete who requires continuously to know his heart rate, or a person with heart disease, or a person undergoing medical tests, for examples only. Alternatively, the carrier may comprise a pregnant woman, and a foetal heart may be monitored.
The portable apparatus 10 of the present example comprises a self contained unit 11 having a battery compartment (not shown) in which a battery is located to provide power to the unit 11. The battery may be of a conventional dry cell nature, or a rechargeable battery, rechargeable in or ex situ as desired.
The apparatus 10 comprises a first transducer means comprising in this example a pair of pads 12,13, which are adapted to be located either side of the carrier's ear lobe 14. The pads 12,13, are sprung together sufficiently that the first transducer means remains attached to the ear lobe 14 even during fairly vigorous head movements.
The pads 12,13, together provide a photoplethysmographic or other electro-optic sensor, one of the pads 12 providing a light source which is received by a light sensor in the other of the pads 13. Preferably pad 13 is located in use behind the ear lobe 14 of the carrier so as thus to be at least partially shielded from extraneous light signals.
The pads 12,13, are each connected via an umbilical 16 to the unit 11, limbs 16a 16b of which may provide a spring to urge the pads 12,13, together. The photoplethysmographic sensor thus provides an electrical input signal to a control circuit within the unit 11, which is indicative of the carrier's heart beats.
The control means may be arranged to determine the carrier's instantaneous heart rate or average heart rate depending upon a selected programme. The carrier may select a desired programme using control buttons 19,20, on the unit 11.
The unit 11 further comprises a speech synthesising means comprising in this example, a memory of digitalised data relating to a vocabulary of words and/or phrases which may be selected by the control circuit depending upon the carrier's heart rate and the audible message to be given.
In one example, the unit 11 may be arranged to deliver an audible message to the carrier every twenty seconds or so, advising the carrier as to his average or instantaneous heart rate, but additionally, in the event that the carriers heart rate falls below or rises above set limits, the control means may be adapted to deliver an audible alarm message to the wearer, or otherwise issue a simple alarm signal.
The speech synthesising means is preferably of a kind able to synthesise speech in a plain language form so as to be readily understandable by the carrier.
A second transducer means 20 is provided which is adapted to convert an electrical output from the unit 11 to an audible message. This may comprise a miniature load speaker 21 as shown, which is connected to the unit 11 via an umbilical 22.
The unit further comprises on/off/volume controls 24,25.
In a modified arrangement, the apparatus may monitor heart rate by other than electro optical methods, or may monitor another body condition altogether.
The unit 11 need not be adapted to be worn on or adjacent to the carrier's ear, but may be arranged to be mounted elsewhere on the carrier's body or clothing.
Any suitable control circuit and speech synthesising means may be used provided that the apparatus is able to deliver an audible message to the carrier.
If desired, the apparatus 10 may have the facility to record the carrier's heart rate, and for such recording to be played back into a computer for example, for more detailed analysis.
In a modified arrangement, instead of separate first and second transducer means (12, 13, 20) a single transducer means able to perform both functions may be used. Further alternatively, if desired a first transducer means
separate from the main unit may be provided which sends signals about the
monitored body condition to the control means,by wire or radio signaL
The features disclosed in the foregoing description or the
accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means
for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the
disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
