Abstract
A locking device for filling to adjacent pairs of wheelnuts on a motor vehicle in order to prevent them from loosening over time, comprises a generally Z-shaped length of steel strip having loops formed at its opposite ends, the loops being formed with spaced-apart transverse grooves 20 on their inwardly-facing surfaces. The locking device 20 exerts a compressive force between the pair of wheelnuts 14 to which it is applied. <IMAGE>
Description
Wheelnut Lockinq Device
This invention relates to a device for locking the wheelnuts of a vehicle against loosening.
It is a problem, particularly with heavy goods vehicles, that the wheelnuts may become loose with time. The wheels of heavy goods vehicles are very large and the wheelnuts are relatively difficult to tighten: this is particularly so where two wheels are mounted to the same studs. Continual vibration of the vehicle and its axles can cause a wheelnut to loosen and, in extreme cases, result in the wheelnut unscrewing from its stud or the wheel severing the stud.
I have now devised a device which is effective in locking the wheelnuts of a vehicle against loosening, but which is easily fitted.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a wheelnut locking device which comprises an elongate member having its opposite ends formed into loops for fitting around a pair of wheelnuts.
Preferably the elongate member comprises a length of e.g. steel strip. Preferably the elongate element has a configuration such that it exerts a compressive force between the two wheelnuts to which it is applied. Preferably the elongate member is generally of a Z-shape configuration.
The wheelnut locking device is easy and quick to apply to a pair of wheelnuts, and when applied serves to hold the wheelnuts against loosening. Further, it is easy for the driver to notice if any of the locking devices is missing.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevation showing part of a wheel fitted with a number of wheelnut locking devices in accordance with the invention; and
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a wheelnut locking device shown fitted to a pair of wheelnuts of the wheel.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a vehicle wheel 10 fitted to a wheel hub of the vehicle in the usual way, that is to say a series of threaded studs 12 are carried by the hub and project through corresponding holes in the wheel, and nuts 14 are tightened onto the projecting ends of the studs 12.
In accordance with this invention, a wheelnut locking device 20 is fitted to adjacent pairs of wheelnuts to prevent those wheelnuts from loosening.
As shown, each locking device 20 comprises a length of steel strip bent generally to the shape of a "Z", with its opposite ends curved back onto the adjacent straight runs. The opposite ends of the steel strip are curved into generally circular shape and are formed with spaced-apart transverse grooves 22 on their inwardly-facing surfaces.
The steel strip exhibits a degree of springiness and the locking device is arranged to exert a compressive force between the pair of wheelnuts to which it is applied. The locking device accordingly grips the wheelnuts and prevents these loosening.
It is a quick and easy task to fit the locking device.
They are also very noticeable when fitted, so that it is easy for a driver to notice when any is missing.
Claims (7)
1) A wheelnut locking device comprising an elongate member having its opposite ends formed into loops for fitting around a pair of wheel nuts.
2) A wheelnut locking device according to claim 1, wherein the elongate member is formed such that it may be fitted around a pair of adjacent wheelnuts.
3) A wheelnut locking device as claimed in claims 1 or 2, wherein the elongate member comprises a length of metal.
4) A wheelnut locking device as claimed in claim 3, wherein the elongate member comprises a length of steel strip.
5) A wheelnut locking device as claimed in any preceding claims, wherein the elongate member has a configuration such that it exerts a compressive force between the two wheelnuts to which it is applied.
6) A wheelnut locking device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the elongate member is generally of a Z-shaped configuration.
7) A wheelnut locking device substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
