Description

A STRUCTURAL ELEMENT The invention relates to a structural element, particularly a lintel which is used to span an aperture in a cavity wall, and to a device for maintaining the dimensional integrity of such an element or lintel.
Previously, a problem experienced with elements or lintels is that of deflection or shape deformation under compressive loads when in use.
It is an object of the present invention to mitigate such disadvantages.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a device for maintaining two spaced apart plate elements in a desired spatial relation, comprising a strut member adapted to extend between the plate elements whereby to maintain them a desired distance apart, and means adjacent one end of the strut member and carried thereby for mounting the strut member on one plate element.
The mounting means may be formed integrally from the strut member, and there may be mounting means adjacent each end of the strut member. This provides for ease of manufacture.
The strut member may comprise a planar plate like member. This is a relatively simple construction, particularly as the device may be formed integrally from a metal which may be coated with plastic. This provides for a thermal break and can prevent corrosion.
There may be a plurality of strut members.
The mounting means may comprise a substantially flat surface for engaging the plate member.
The mounting means may comprise a tab extending substantially at a right angle from the plate member.
The device may further be provided with a strengthening means, which may serve to prevent movement of the mounting means relative to the or each strut member. The strengthening means may comprise an L-shaped rib, one bar of said L contacting the mounting means and the other contacting a strut member.
The device may also be provided with stop means, which functions to prevent movement of the mounting means towards the or each strut member. The stop means may comprise a member disposed on the mounting means in a position such that movement of the mounting means towards the or each strut member causes the member to contact the or each strut member. The stop means may comprise for example, a flange formed from an edge of the mounting means adjacent a strut member and disposed to contact a corresponding flange carried by the strut member.
The device may be formed from any substantially rigid material, and is preferably formed from a metal or a plastic.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a set of parts, comprising a structural element such as a lintel having two spaced apart plate elements, and at least one device as hereinbefore defined, adapted to be mounted on the plate elements.
The plate elements may be substantially parallel plate elements.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a structural element such as a lintel having two spaced apart plate elements and, mounted on those elements, and extending between them, a device as hereinbefore defined.
The structural element may include a plurality of devices mounted at intervals along the length of the plate elements. It is preferred that the structural element includes a device mounted close to each end of the plate elements, and it is further preferred that the devices are positioned from about 50 - 150mm from each of the ends. It is most preferred that the devices are positioned at about 100mm from each of the ends.
It is further preferred that the or each device is secured to each of said plate elements by a suitable fixing means. Examples of suitable fixing means are rivets, screws and welds. This provides a secure fixing and an improvement in structural performance.
Devices and structural elements or lintels embodying the invention are hereinafter described, way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a structural element including devices according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a device according to the invention; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing alternative ways of fitting a device according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are referred to by like numerals, there is shown a device 1 for maintaining two spaced apart plate elements 2 and 3, such as substantially parallel and upright (in use) front and rear (again in use) members 2 and 3 of a structural element such as a lintel 4 in a desired spatial relation. The lintel 4 can support a load over an aperture in which is mounted for example a door or a window frame (not shown) and as a result the lintel 4 is subject to applied tension loads at its longitudinal ends, and compressive loads at or near the mid-span position.
The tension loads at the end can have a tendency to make the plate elements 2 and 3 splay apart, which whilst upsetting the dimensional integrity of the lintel, can also lead to movement and hence cracking or failure of surrounding plaster, mortar or cement (not shown). In order to obviate the splaying out, there is provided a device 1 for maintaining two spaced apart plate elements 2 and 3 in a desired spatial relation, comprising a strut member 5 adapted to extend between the plate elements 2 and 3 whereby to maintain them the desired distance apart, and means 6 adjacent at least one end of the strut member 5 and carried thereby for mounting the strut member 5 on one plate element 2, 3.
The device 1 may be integrally formed from for example mild steel and may be coated with a plastic coating so that there is no metal to metal contact between the device 1 and the lintel 4 so that corrosive electrochemical action is not set up in use.
Referring to Fig. 2, the embodiment of the device 1 shown comprises a Ushaped member including Shaped strengthening ribs 7 and stop means in the form of inwardly extending flanges 8.
Referring to Fig. 1, in use, the device 1 is secured between plate elements 2, 3 of the lintel 4 by suitable fixing means, including separate mechanical fasteners (not shown) or means such as rivets, screws or welds. Any convenient number of devices 1 may be used, and they may be positioned anywhere along the length of the structural element 4. However, as illustrated in Figure 1, an arrangement wherein devices are placed close to, but not immediately adjacent to each end of the element 4, and close to the centre of the element, is preferred. In particular it has been found that devices fitted about 50-150mm from the ends of the element 4 are unexpectedly better at reducing deflections under load, than when fitted close to or at the ends. Devices 1 fitted at the mid span position act as struts under compressive loads.
As stated, the devices may be secured in place by any suitable means. It is preferred that the devices 1 are rigidly secured in place, and that the devices are secured to both plate elements 2, 3, in order to provide an improvement in structural performance.
Referring to Fig. 3 it can be seen that the device 1 can be secured in a variety of attitudes.
