Abstract

Reduction of the quantity of oxides of nitrogen produced during the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels using naturally aspirated (atmospheric) gas burners is by the recirculation of combustion products. A fan (3) is used to recirculate products of combustion from a gas fed water heating boiler through metal conduits (4, 5 and 6) into the combustion air required by the burners (7). Other electrical and/or mechanical devices or non-mechanical devices may be used to induce and recirculate products of combustion from any convenient take-off point in the appliance to any suitable point of re-entry into part or all of the air required for combustion. Typically this method of NOx reduction can be used on, for example, domestic, commercial or industrial central heating boilers, warm air heaters, water heaters, catering appliances, and process heaters. <IMAGE>

Description

REDUCTION OF EMISSIONS OF OXIDES OF NITROGEN FROM ATMOSPHERIC BOILERS TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to a method of reducing the quantity of oxides of nitrogen produced during the combustion of hydrocarbon uels on naturally aspirated gas burners.
BACKGROUND Across the world there is increasing interest in environmental pollution. The use of hydrocarbon fuels in a wide variety of combustion processes contributes to atmospheric pollution by producing carton monoxide, carbon dioxide and, more particularly, the oxides of nitrogen.
Standards drafting panels in Europe and the US are attempting to curb this pollution by including maximum permissible emission levels for the oxides of nitrogen (known generically as NO) in all new Standards.
In order to comply with these new, stricter, requirements manufacturers of burners and equipment burning hydrocarbon fuels are investigating methods of NO reduction. To date these have centred on either specially designed burners or by using means of cooling the flame close to its point of propagation by the use of metallic rods.
This invention claims to provide a method of reducIng the NOy emission crom hydrocarbon combustion processes, using naturally aspirated gas burners, by the recirculation of controlled amounts 0 combustion products into part or ail ot the air provided for combustion.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FESTURES Fe appliances operating with naturally aspirated gas burners, i.e. navinct no mechanical means of delivering their combustion air 'atmospheric burners), a quantity of the products of combustion is drawn from some suitable point in the appliance an introduced by some means into part of, or all of, the combustion air supplied to the burners and/or any other combustion air entering the combustion chamber. The products to be recirculated may be wIthdrawn by means of a fan, or by other electrical and/or mechanical devices, or by some other means sue as the pressure drop between the inside and outside of the burner, or between the combustion chamber, the burner and any other part of the appliance or external air. These products of combustion ae transported via a pipe or pipes, or other means, to eac burner. These products of combustion mix with part or all of the combustion air, depending on their point of introduction, and effect a reduction in the amount of NOx produced.
Example :- One method of applying the invention ili now be described by way of exemle with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the front view of a typical gas fired hot water heating boiler, with naturally aspirated gas burners, fitted with the invention as described above.
Figure 2 illustrates one method ci introducing t recirculated combustion products i.e. into tne mouth of the burner venturi.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 the invention consists of an electrically operated fan (3) mounted on the front of the boiler collector hood (2). The collector hood (2) gathers together the products of combustion before they are discharged from the appliance through the flue pipe 'li.
In order to effectively reciculate the necessary quantities of combustion products a suitable conduit is provided. In this example a metal tube (4) allows te combustion products to pass down into a distribution manifold (5) and, in this example.
into the three naturally aspirated atmospheric) gas burners (7). Each burmer is provided with an individual injector pipe (6) which passes combustion products into the mouth of each burner venturi (9). It is normal practice for each burner (7) te be provided ith a gas infector 8 which forces gas into the mouth of the venturi (?, at low pressure. Tis causes a localised reduction in pressure, inducing air Into the burner (7) where it mixes with the recirculated products of combustion discharging from the injector pipes (6).

Claims (5)

1) A method of recirculating products of combustion generated during the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels using naturally aspirated (atmospheric) gas burners. One method of application is shown in Figures 1 and 2.
2) A method of recirculating products of combustion herein the term "recirculation" means the removal of a quantity cf products of combustion by some means from any suitable point in the appliance and re-introducing it by some meant any part of the air used for the combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel.
3) A method of recirculating products of combustion wherein the phrase " removal of a quantity of products of combustion by some means" means removal by any electrical and/or mechanically driven device or by virtue of any pressure difference which may exist either as a result of the operation of such a device or as a result of naturally induced air or gas movement.
4) A method of recirculating products of combustion wherein the phrase "re-introducing it" (that quantity of products of combustion removed and re-introduced as described unter Claim 2) "by some means" means re-introducing by anv electrical and/or mechanically driven device or by virtue of any pressure difference which may exist either as a result of fle operation of such a device or as a result of naturally induced air or gas movement.
5) A method of recirculating products of combustion wherein the term "naturally aspirated (atmospheric) gas burners means gas burners which have no electricai and/or mechanical eans ci providing part or all of the air required for combustien but which used some form of gas injector to pass the @ydrocarbon fuel into the body of the burner together it p1rt ii or all of the air used for combustion.
