Description

Improvements in or relating to Glazing Apparatus ThD present invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to glazing apparatus.
It is sometimes desired to apply one glaze to the outer surfaces of an item of hollow-ware and a second glaze to the inside surface. The glazes may differ in colour, for instance. A previous proposal applies the second glaze manually, by swirling the glaze within the item until the inside surface is fully coated. This is a tedious and laborious task, with results of unreliable quality.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided glazing apparatus comprising retaining means operable to retain an item to be glazed, rotation means operable to rotate an item retained by the retaining means, and tipping means operable to tip the retaining means while an item retained therein is rotating, from a position at which an item to be glazed can receive glaze, to a position at which excess glaze can drain off.
The rotation means may be operable to rotate the retaining means, thereby rotating an item retained thereon. Preferably the retaining means comprises a surface on which an item to be glazed may sit, and means associated with the surface for temporarily retaining the item in position. The means associated with the surface may be arranged to operate by suction. The means associated with the surface may comprise a passage which terminates at the said surface, and through which suction may be applied to an item sitting on the surface.
Preferably the surface is formed on a pad of resilient material on which the item sits. Means to accommodate the bottom of the item may be provided in the said pad of resilient material. Preferably the accommodation means consists of a recess in the surface.
Preferably the rotation means comprises a motor.
The motor may be connected to the retaining means by means of an elongate member, which lies on the axis of rotation of the retaining member and the item of ware.
Preferably the elongate member has a suction passage which runs down the axis of rotation of the elongate member, and terminates at a position adjacent an item to be retained, whereby suction may be applied to the item through the suction passage.
Preferably the tipping means comprises a pivot for the retaining means, and drive means operable to control the orientation of the retaining means about the pivot.
Preferably the drive means comprises a piston and cylinder. The cylinder may be a pneumatic cylinder. The motor may be mounted to pivot with the retaining means.
Preferably the tipping means is operable to cause the retaining means to tip at a rate which is constant and controlled by the tipping means.
Preferably the apparatus comprises control means operable to control the relative speeds of rotation and tipping, to ensure adequate coverage by the glaze is achieved.
Preferably dispenser means are provided to dispense a predetermined amount of glaze in each unglazed item.
Preferably collection means are provided to collect excess glaze that drains out of the item when tipped.
Preferably the apparatus further comprises means operable to recycle the excess glaze.
Preferably the apparatus comprises a plurality of retaining means as aforesaid, whereby a plurality of items may be simultaneously glazed.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a schematic front elevation of apparatus according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a schematic side elevation of the apparatus of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a schematic front elevation of an alternative embodiment.
Referring to the drawings, there is provided glazing apparatus 10 comprising retaining means 12, to retain an item 14 to be glazed, rotation means 16, in the form of an electric motor, to rotate the retaining means 12 thereby rotating the item 14 about an axis substantially perpendicular to the base 18 of the item 14, and tipping means 20 to tip the retaining means 12 while the platform 12 is rotating from a position at which the item 14 is substantially upright and can receive glaze 22, to a position at which excess glaze can drain off.
The retaining means 12 comprises a platform in the form of a rubber pad 24 having a top surface 26. A recess 28 is formed centrally on the upper surface 26 to accommodate the base 18 of the item 14 to be glazed. To help secure the item 14, a suction passage 30 extends from the surface 26 and communicates with an external pump (not shown). The suction passage 30 allows suction to be used temporarily to secure the item 14 on the platform 12. The resilience of the rubber pad 24 ensures a good seal around the end of the passage 30. When the suction is released, the item 14 can be easily removed from the rubber pad 24.
Extending from the platform 12 along the axis of rotation 32 is an arm 34. The suction passage 30 runs centrally along the arm 34. The lower end 36 of the arm 34 is coupled to the electric motor 16 which can therefore drive the rotation of the pad 24 about the axis 32. An item 14 retained on the pad 24 will thereby be rotated.
The tipping means 20 comprises a plate 38 on which the arm 34 is rotatably mounted to support the platform 12 in a fixed position in relation to the plate 38. The plate 38 is mounted on a pivot 40 about which the plate 38 may move under the control of a pneumatic piston and cylinder arrangement 42. Thus, the arrangement 42 can control the rotation of the pad 24 about the pivot 40 to tip the pad 24 from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 1, as indicated by the positions shown in broken lines in Fig. 1. The lowest position to which the retaining means may be tipped is preferably beyond these shown in Fig. 1, and below the level of the pivot 40.
The plate 38 has two bearing races 44, 46 in which the arm 34 is located and prevented from all movement except for rotation about the axis 32. The motor 16 is attached to the plate 38 between the bearing race 46 and the pivot 40. A lobe 48 extends from the plate 38 to connect the plate 38 to the pivot 40.
The pneumatic piston and cylinder arrangement 42 is coupled to the lobe 48 by means of a coupling 50, through which the arrangement 42 may drive the lobe 48, causing pivotal movement of the lobe 48, plate 38, arm 34 and pad 24.
A dispenser 52 is provided and controlled to dispense a predetermined amount of glaze 22 into the item 14. A sump 54 is provided to collect excess glaze (as will be described). The sump 54 channels the glaze to recycling pipework 56 in which there is provided a reservoir 57 from which a pump 58 draws glaze for supplying the dispenser 52. The reservoir 57 can be replenished as required.
In use, with the arm 34 vertical and the surface 26 horizontal, the item 14 is placed in the recess 28 on the rubber pad 24 and held there by suction applied through the passage 30. A predetermined amount of glaze 22 is dispensed therein. The item 14 is then rotated about the axis 32 which is preferably substantially perpendicular to and central in the base 18 of the item 14. The rotation is conveyed from the motor 16 through the arm 34, the platform 12 and the rubber pad 24.
When the platform 12 is rotating and the item 14 contains glaze, the pneumatic piston and cylinder arrangement 42 begins to pivot the apparatus 10 about the pivot 40. The pivotal movement tips the item 14 through substantially 1500 until the axis of the arm 34 is substantially 600 below the horizontal. The combined rotational and tipping motions work to swirl the glaze 22 within the item 14, all the way up to, and eventually over, the rim of the item 14 so that excess glaze drains into the sump 54. The relative speeds of the rotational and pivotal movement are chosen to provide a full coat of glaze 22 to the item 14. Automatic control means may be incorporated in the arrangement 42 to control the relative speeds. The speeds required to ensure a full coat will depend on many factors, such as the amount and consistency of the glaze. After the excess glaze has drained off into the sump 54 (from which it is recycled) the arm 34 returns to the upright position, the motor 16 stops, the suction is released and the glazed item is removed for firing, and is replaced by an unglazed item.
Fig. 3 indicates how a plurality of retaining means and associated apparatus can be used together over a common sump to allow several items to be glazed simultaneously.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, different arrangements may be used to provide rotational and pivotal movement. These may include a second electric motor to replace the pneumatic piston and cylinder, and provide the drive for the pivotal movement.
The apparatus may be adapted to retain and glaze various forms of ware, for instance by changing the form of the rubber pad 24. The suction arrangement for securing an item may be replaced by other suitable securing means.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
