Abstract
A shallow funnel 1 adapted to rest on the rim of a drinking vessel, with a wide opening at the centre of the funnel, incorporating a member 2 which depends into the centre portion of the drinking vessel. When placed on a drinking vessel in a microwave oven the member initiates bubbles so that the liquid starts boiling, and then the funnel contains the liquid to prevent spillage. <IMAGE>
Description
MICROWAVE OVEN LIQUID SAVER
This invention relates to a microwave oven liquid saver.
Microwave ovens are useful in that they can be used to heat liquids such as milk in the container from which they are to be consumed. They can heat much more quickly than a conductive heat source, and this method of heating means that only one container is used for both heating and drinking.
Liquids can only boil where there is a surface or particle for the bubbles of vapour to form on. Microwave radiation heats the bulk of the liquid. This results in the hottest part of the liquid being in the centre of the container, where there is no surface on which the bubbles can form.
Thus a liquid can become superheated, without boiling as it is heated in the microwave oven. When the liquid is disturbed, as occurs when the container is removed from the oven or stirred the superheated liquid boils over, which causes a spillage, and where the container is being held in the hand can cause injury by scalding. If the liquid does boil over when it is being heated in the oven it tends to boil over suddenly and vigorously causing a spillage.
According to the present invention there is provided a shallow funnel which rests on the top of the container.
Incorporated in the funnel is a member which depends into the liquid to be heated.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accomganying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the funnel in perspective.
Figure 2 shows the funnel as it is used resting on a mug.
Referring to the drawing the liquid saver comprises a shallow funnel of non metallic material, with a centre opening of diameter less than the diameter of the container upon which it is to be used.
In use it is placed on the container with the funnel part 1 resting on the upper rim, and the member 2 depending into the liquid.
When the liquid is heated to its boiling point the member 2 forms a surface on which bubbles of vapour can form.
Once boiling has commenced the liquid boils up into the space contained by the funnel 1. It has a much larger area from which the vapour can evaporate, and hence does not boil over the edge of the funnel, but continues to boil until the microwave is switched off.
Claims (5)
1. A member adapted to rest on the rim of a drinking vessel and to depend into the centre portion of the cavity of the vessel.
2. A shallow cone shaped funnel adapted to rest on the rim of a drinking vessel, with a wide circular opening at the centre of the funnel, incorporating a member which depends into the cavity of the drinking vessel.
3. A shallow cone shaped funnel as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the member does not form a tube continuously joined to the funnel around the circumference of the tube.
4. A shallow funnel as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein the member is formed with a roughened surface.
5. A shallow funnel as claimed in Claim 2, Claim 3 or
Claim 4 wherein the funnel and the member are separate, and adapted to be fitted together in use.
