Abstract

A sheet cover 1 e.g. articulated bulk trailer, that can be rolled open from either side of the trailer enabling it to be loaded from either side without restriction. The cover is releasably secured to the trailer and can be unwound simply from a ground standing position in either direction across the trailer and restrained by strapping 7 to the overhanging leading edges which can be tightened onto the trailer and support poles 2 to tension the sheet covering the trailer prior to transit. Cambered ribs 4 at each end provide rolling guides for the leading edge and ridge poles for winding up and also form a profile for the tensioned sheet. The rear rib has a telescopic strut support 6 to the trailer rear gate to allow tipping and opening of the gate without deformation of the support rib. <IMAGE>

Description

TWO WAY ROLLING SHEET TRAILER COVER This invention relates to a two way opening trailer cover.
Trailer covers of the type subject of the invention are designed to afford full weather protection to a variety of absorbent loose materials, for example sand and grain.
Present use of trailer covers allows the load to be uncovered in one direction only. This restricts loading of the trailer from the opposite side only.
This invention provides for a cover that can be rolled to the left or right side uncovering the trailer and allowing unobstructed access to load from either side. The cover remains supported throughout on tubular poles the full length of the trailer. These inturn are secured to the trailer body to hold the rolled up cover ready for unwinding to recover the trailer.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in axonometric view the cover partially wound.
Figure 2 shows in cross section the operation of the cover from the right hand side. Operation from the left hand side is identical.
Figure 3 illustrates the cranking arm mechanism to wind the cover.
Referring to the drawing the cover comprises a heavy gauge PVC cover (1) with webbing straps welded and stitched to each cover edge and opposing trailer side panel (3). These retain the open cover on the trailer side in ready for recovering. There are three tubular aluminium poles, one to each leading edge and one centre ridge pole (2). These extend the full length of the trailer with the PVC covering lapped over, welded and stitched to retain the poles. The centre, ridge pole has a chain link secured to the trailer bulkhead to resist uplift. Cambered plywood ribs (4) to each end provide rolling guides for the cover poles and an intermediate triangular truss rib (5) ensures the cover does not retain water and sag. This rib can be removed to afford clear access to the trailer.
With the cover in place, ratchet tensioning straps (7) fixed to the cover along the trailer length, each side, tightly hold the cover to the trailer sides for transportation.
To roll open the cover first release the side tensioned straps (7) and insert the spigot end ratchet arm (8) into the socket end of one edge pole. This end has a universal joint connection to the arm. Either side pole can be selected depending which direction the cover is to roll open. Turning the arm rolls back the cover in the chosen direction until arrested by the webbing straps (3).
To cover over the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.
INDEX TO ILLUSTRATIONS 1. PVC cover minimum 20gauge with stitched and welded seams 2. 50mm diameter aluminium tubes. Rear end with 25mm square section socket inserted.
3. 50mm wide webbing straps 2 at each location. One end riveted to trailer side panel the other stitched and welded to the underside of the cover on the opposite side of the trailer. The second strap has this repeated in the opposite direction.
4. Plywood cambered support ribs at each end of trailer. These are bolted to aluminium angle cleats, riveted to the trailer side panels.
5. Framed timber truss rib. Bottom cord with projecting bolts at extremities to locate into aluminium hollow square section welded to interior of trailer side panels. This rib is removable.
6. Telescopic strut, cleat with pin joint connections to top of trailer gate and underside of plywood arch rib to provide centre support to the rib and enabling the trailer gate to open when tipping without distorting rib.
7. Straps, stitched and welded to cover with tensioning devices welded at regular intervals along outside of trailer side panels.
8. Ratchet arm with universal joint and spigot end.

Claims (4)

1A two way rolling sheet trailer cover comprising a uPVC sheet of size and shape to suit trailer, tubular aluminium poles to maintain rigidity of the sheet and to enable it to be rolled up, means of turning poles to wind sheet, a means of tensioning the sheet to the trailer when covered, shaped rolling guides to prevent sagging of sheet and shed surface water.
2 A two way rolling sheet cover as claimed in Claim 1 wherein either edge pole can be rolled to uncover the trailer from either side.
3 A two way rolling sheet cover as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim
2 wherein the means of restraining the cover when rolled up is provided by internal strapping across the trailer to hold ready for recovering.
4 A two way rolling sheet trailer cover substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 3 of the accompanying drawing.
