Abstract

A chopstick holder is formed from a one-piece moulding of flexible plastics material. It consists of a pair of chopstick grips (2, 3) joined by a bridging piece. The holder can be manufactured by extruding a triple tube, cutting the triple tube into lengths and shortening the central tube portion to increase the flexibility of the outer tubes. The central tube portion comprises the bridging piece. <IMAGE>

Description

Chopstick holder The invention relates to a holder for a pair of chopsticks.
Diners in Oriental-style restaurants may prefer, or may be expected, to eat their meal with chopsticks. Those brought up in a Western culture will often find chopsticks difficult to manipulate and liable to lead to embarrassing situations.
An object of the present invention, which is defined in the claims appended hereto, is to provide diners with a device to aid the manipulation of chopsticks. The device, which comprises a flexible holder for a pair of chopsticks, as well as being easy and convenient to use, is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and so can be supplied to restaurants cheaply enough to be given to guests free of charge.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view of one form of holder according to the invention, and Figure 2 is an alternative form of the holder, particularly suitable for mass production.
Referring first to Figure 1, the holder consists of a moulding 1 of flexible, resilient plastics material, all in one piece. It comprises a pair of chopstick grips, 2, 3, each arranged to receive and grip a chopstick, joined by a bridging piece.
Chopsticks are usually made from bamboo or plastic and approximate to a standard size and shape, being about 270mm long and about 5mm in width, square in section at the hand-held end, and bevelled at the corners from the middle onwards to become approximately circular in section at the food-gripping tip. The grips may each consist of a tubular section which may be of such a diameter that a chopstick is a push fit in it, but preferably are rather smaller and are slit lengthwise so as to act as clips for the chopsticks.
The bridging piece 4 which joins the two grips in the embodiment of Figure 1 is of solid plastic, and is of such a size as to enable the pair of chopsticks to rest on a finger-tip comfortably in use. As shown in the Figure, the bridging piece may be of an angular shape to give increased flexibility. The device may be manufactured economically by injection moulding.
Figure 2 shows a form of the invention which is even simpler and cheaper to manufacture. In this Figure the positions of the chopsticks is indicated by the dotted outlines 5 and 6.
In this embodiment the bridging piece 4 is tubular. To manufacture the device a continuous extrusion is produced which in cross-section comprises three tubes joined side by side. At least the outer tubes are of suitable size for gripping a pair of chopsticks. The extrusion is cut into short lengths and the central tube portion of each length is trimmed back at one or both ends 8, 9, as shown in the Figure so as to leave a bridging piece of suitable flexibility. The outer tubes are preferably split lengthways, as shown in the Figure.

Claims (4)

1. A chopstick holder formed from a one-piece moulding of flexible plastics material and comprising a pair of generally tubular chopstick grips, each of such a diameter as to receive a chopstick, joined by a bridging piece.
2. A chopstick holder according to Claim 1 in which the grips are longitudinally slit tubes of sufficiently small diameter as to grip a chopstick.
3. A chopstick holder according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the bridging piece is a tube.
4. A chopstick holder according to Claim 3 manufactured by extruding a triple tube, cutting the triple tube into lengths, and shortening the central tube portion to increase the flexibility of the outer tubes.
