Abstract

A security device for golf clubs consists of a disc 1 with a pair of semicircular arms 3, 4, hinged to it. In use the arms are folded together, trapping the shafts of the clubs against the disc, in an annular space between the inner surface of the arms and the outer periphery of the disc. The arms are locked together e.g. by a padlock 7. A cable 8 may be used to secure the device to a fixed object such as a port. <IMAGE>

Description

Security device for golf equipment.
The invention relates to a security device for golf equipment.
Items of golf equipment, golf clubs in particular, are expensive and commonly are left unattended at times, and so are particularly liable to be stolen. An object of the present invention is to provide a security device to prevent such theft.
Such a security device is disclosed in US patent 5 004 100. The device of that patent comprises a flat plate with three parallel slots to receive the shafts of golf clubs and in which they are retained by a hinged arm and padlock. The clubs need to be placed individually with their shafts within the slots.
The present invention, which is defined in the appended claims, employs a disc to which are attached a pair of semicircular arms.
The action of closing the arms gathers up the clubs, making the device more convenient in use.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a device according to the invention, Figure 2 shows the device in use, and Figure 3 shows an alternative locking arrangement.
Referring first to Figure 1, the device comprises a generally circular disc 1 with a projection 2. To the projection are hinged two semicircular arms,3,4, each of which is provided at its further end with an aperture 5, 6. by means of which the arms can be locked together by a padlock 7. The overall diameter of the disc and arms is such as to fit conveniently into the mouth of an average golf bag, and lies in the range 17 cm to 23 cm, preferably being about 20 cm.
A security cable 8 is secured by an eyelet to a further aperture 9 on the projection 2. This cable is of the known kind commonly used for securing bicycles, and comprises braided or twisted alloy steel wires within a plastic sheath. The further end of this cable is formed into an eyelet or loop 10 large enough to pass over one of the semicircular arms 4.
The use of the device of the invention will now be described, referring also to Figure 2.
The clubs are put into the golf bag 11 and the device is placed at the mouth of the bag with the arms 3,4 opened wide. The security cable 8 is passed through the handle of the bag, then round a post, through the handle of a golf trolley, or round some other object to which the bag 11 and clubs are to be secured, and the end loop 10 is placed over one of the arms. The arms are then folded together, gathering up the clubs and trapping them against the disc 1, and are locked together with the padlock 7.
Figure 3 shows a modification in which the arms 3 and 4 are secured by an integral lock 12, instead of by a padlock. The lock shown is a combination lock, and is attached to a further projection 13 on the disc 1, thereby locking the arms to the disc, as well as to each other. The device of Figure 1 may be similarly provided with a projection from the disc 1 to which the arms are locked.

Claims (6)

1. A security device for golf equipment comprising a generally circular disc and a pair of semicircular arms hinged to the disc and of a radius such as to receive a narrow part of the shaft of a golf club between the periphery of the disc and the arms, the extremities of the arms being provided with locking means to lock the arms to one another.
2. A security device according to claim 1 in which the locking means is arranged also to lock the arms to the disc.
3. A security device according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the locking means is a lock attached to the disc or to one of the arms and engaging the extremities of both arms.
4. A security device according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the locking means comprises apertures for the insertion of a padlock or security cable.
5. A security device according to any preceding claim provided with a security cable attached to the disc at one end and having at the other a loop large enough to fit over one of the arms, whereby the device may be secured to an external object or objects.
6. A security device according to any preceding claim having an overall diameter lying between 17 cm and 23 cm so as to correspond to the opening of a golf club bag.
