Abstract
An ash tray includes a tray body (10), a plate (20) having a plurality of cutouts (22) at a periphery thereof and a central recess (21) formed in an upper side thereof for receiving a candle, and an outer housing (30) having an opening (31) in a top thereof. The tray body (10) defines a compartment (16) for receiving cigarette ashes and finished cigarettes and includes a plurality of cigarette rests (11) formed in a periphery thereof. The tray body (10) further has a ridge means (12) extending upward from an upper surface of the tray body (10), thereby separating the upper surface into an inner upper surface on which the plate (20) rests and an outer upper surface on which the outer housing (30) rests. The flame from the candle will completely combust incompletely burned gas that might be contained in the smoke from cigarettes placed in the rests. <IMAGE>
Description
ash tray The present invention relates to ash trays and, more particularly, to an improved ash tray structure which may receive a candle therein which, in turn, can be lit to completely combust incompletely burned gas contained in the smoke produced by cigarettes.
Ash trays are used to temporarily deposit cigarette ashes and burning and/or finished cigarettes. It is, however, improper to let persons who do not smoke be exposed to the smoke and thus suffer from so-called "second hand smoking."
Therefore, there has been a long and unfulfilled need for an improved ash tray structure to mitigate and/or obviate the aforementioned drawbacks.
The present invention provides an ash tray which includes a tray body, a plate having a plurality of cutouts at a periphery thereof and a central recess formed in an upper side thereof, and an outer housing having an opening in a top thereof. The tray body defines a compartment for receiving cigarette ashes and finished cigarettes and includes a plurality of cigarette rests formed in a periphery thereof. The tray body further has a ridge means extending upward from an upper surface of the tray body, thereby separating the upper surface into an inner upper surface on which the plate rests and an outer upper surface on which the outer housing rests.
A candle is received in the central recess of the plate and can be lit to completely combust incompletely burned gas contained in the smoke produced by cigarettes resting in the cigarette rests. The completely combusted gas exits the outer housing via the opening which also serves as a vent for air circulation.
Another advantage of the present invention is that the smoker may use the frame of the candle to light the cigarette via the opening. A further advantage of the present invention is that the outer housing may be transparent and ash tray may thus serve as an illuminating device.
Other objects, advantages, and novel features of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an exploded view of an ash tray in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the ash tray in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another embodiment of an ash tray partial in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 and 2, an ash tray in accordance with the present invention generally includes a tray body 10, a plate 20 having a plurality of cutouts 22 at a periphery thereof and a central recess 21 formed in an upper side thereof, and an outer housing 30 having an opening 31 in a top thereof.
Similar to a conventional ash tray, the tray body 10 defines a compartment 16 for receiving cigarette ashes and finished cigarettes and includes a plurality of cigarette rests 11 formed in a periphery thereof. The tray body 10 further has a ridge means 12 extending upward from an upper surface of the tray body 10, thereby separating the upper surface into an inner upper surface 13 and an outer upper surface 14. The plate 20 rests on the inner upper surface 13 and the outer housing 30 rests on the outer upper surface 14 as shown in Fig. 2.
As shown in Fig. 2, a candle 50 is received in the central recess 21 and can be lit to completely combust incompletely burned gas contained in the smoke produced by cigarettes resting in the cigarette rests 11. This is because the smoke produced by the cigarettes in the rests 11 is guided through the cutouts 22 in the periphery of the plate 20 into the inside of the outer housing 30, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2, and the temperature of a position at a distance of 0.2mm to the outer flame of the candle 50 may reach 720"C, and thus able to completely combust incompletely burned gas that might be contained in the smoke produced by the cigarettes. The completely combusted gas exit the outer housing via the opening 31 which also serves as a vent for air circulation.
Another advantage of the present invention is that the smoker may use the frame of the candle 50 to light the cigarette via the opening 31. This is because the temperature of a position at a distance of 7cm to the flame of the candle 50 may reach 300"C, i.e., the temperature in the opening 31 is sufficiently high to light the cigarette.
A further advantage of the present invention is that the outer housing may be transparent and ash tray may thus serve as an illuminating device.
Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that many other possible modifications and variations can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Claims (3)
1. An ash tray comprising a tray body, a plate having a plurality of cutouts in a periphery thereof and a central recess formed in an upper side thereof for receiving a candle, and an outer housing having an opening in a top portion thereof, said tray body defining a compartment for receiving cigarette ashes and finished cigarettes and comprising a plurality of cigarette rests formed in a periphery thereof, said tray body further having a ridge means extending upward from an upper surface of the tray body, thereby separating the upper surface into an inner upper surface on which said plate rests and an outer upper surface on which said outer housing rests.
2. The ash tray as claimed in claim 1 wherein said outer housing is transparent.
3. An ash tray substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
