Abstract

A board game based on a limited overs cricket match wherein counters representing batters (striker and non-striker), bowler and wicket-keeper are placed on indicated spots on the board. Counters representing nine fielders are placed within sections of the board identified by the letters A - R, a minimum number of counters having to be within the ellipse at all times. The batting player or side chooses one of three batting options. For each ball of the agreed number of overs per innings, runs may or may not be scored and a batter may or may not be dismissed. The exact outcome of each ball is determined by the combination of the batting option, the throw of two differing-sized dice and reference to decision cards which themselves require the throw of the two dice. The player or side scoring the greater number of runs, wins. <IMAGE>

Description

CRICKET BOARD GAME This invention relates to a board game based on a limited overs cricket match.
This invention includes apparatus substantially as described herein and illustrated in Figures 1 - 9.
The apparatus not illustrated includes two dice of differing sizes and two sets of counters, each set numbered 1 - 11 representing the members of two cricket teams.
The game may be played by two players or sides, or by one player making the required decisions and throws of dice for both teams.
The progress of the game is recorded on standard cricket score-cards exactly as in the real game of cricket.
The players agree the number of overs per innings. This can be 40, 45, 50, 55 or 60. Each over consists of 6 balls.
The players write the names of the eleven members of their teams on a Teams Card (Figure 2). During play, batters numbered 1 - 5 have a higher chance of scoring runs and a lower chance of dismissal than those numbered 6 - 8, who similarly have better chances than those numbered 9 - 11.
The Play Board (Figure 1) is placed on a flat surface. The fielding player places the counter representing the bowler on the indicated spot and the counter for the wieket-keeper on one of the WK spots, either close to the wicket ("up") or distant from the wicket ("back"). The nine counters representing fielders are placed as desired in the lettered sections but there must be a minimum of four (or other agreed number) inside the elliptical "ring" at all times.
The batting player places counters representing the batters on the "striker" and 1,non-striker" spots.
Before each ball is bowled the batting player displays one of the three Batting Cards (Figures 3 - 5).
A ball is bowled by the bowling player throwing the small die and the batting player the large die. The combination of the two faces is compared with the displayed Batting Card and determines the outcome of each ball.
The card indicates one of eight possibilities; no runs 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 runs, extras or the chance of a dismissal ("Appeal").
When a batter scores an odd number of runs the counters representing the batters change ends, the striker becoming non-striker. Similarly, at the end of each over the counters change ends.
When the Batting Card indicates "Extras" the dice are thrown to determine the nature of extras as shown by comparison with the Extras Card (Figure 6). Dice are thrown again and compared with the card to discover the number of extras scored.
When the Batting Card indicates "Appeal" the dice are thrown and compared with the Appeals Card (Figure 7).
If "Bowled" is shown it means that the batter has been bowled out.
If "Caught" is shown the dice are thrown and compared with the Catches Card (Figure 8). This will indicate a section of the Play Board (Figure 1) and a catch is possible only if a fielding counter is placed in that section. If the section is so occupied the bowling player throws a die and if "1" is thrown the catch is dropped, otherwise the batter is caught out.
If "LBW" is shown the bowling player throws a die and if "1" or "2" is thrown the appeal is refused, otherwise the batter is out.
If "Run Out" is shown the batting player throws a die. If "5" or "6" is thrown the appeal is refused, otherwise the batter is out. Both dice are thrown and compared with the Run Out Card (Figure 9). This will indicate the details of which batter is run out, the number of runs (if any) scored, and whether the new batter becomes striker or non-striker.
If "Stumped" is shown and a counter has been placed on the WK "Up" spot, the fielding player throws a die. If "1" is thrown the appeal is refused, otherwise the batter is stumped out.
No bowler may ball two overs consecutively.
No bowler may ball more than one-fifth of the total number of overs allocated per innings.
The innings of each team closes either when ten of the batters have been dismissed or the allocated number of overs has been bowled.
The team scoring the greater number of runs is the winner. If the scores are equal the team having had fewer batters dismissed is the winner. If both number of runs and batters dismissed is equal the game is tied.
