Abstract

A seat assembly for a vehicle comprises a split folding backrest having two backrest members 18, 22, and a support beam 32 all of which can be folded down into a folded position. The beam 32 is releasably attached to the vehicle body at each end, and to the backrest members 18, 22 by catch mechanisms 52, 54, 56. One of the backrest members has a seatbelt 24 anchored to its upper edge 28 for use by the centre occupant of the seat. Either of the backrest members 18, 22 can be folded down independently, or both can be folded down together with the support beam 32. <IMAGE>

Description

Vehicle Passenger Restraints The present invention relates to restraints for passengers using seats in vehicles which have split backrests, each part of which folds down. Where there is a need to attach the upper anchorage of a three point seatbelt to a folding backrest, for example for the centre occupant of a seat for three, it is difficult to provide sufficient support for the seatbelt anchorage for it to be effective in restraining the passenger in a violent crash.
The present invention therefore provides a seat assembly for a vehicle comprising a seat having first and second backrest members, each of which is pivotable independently of the other between an in use position and a folded position, and a support beam movable between an in use position, in which it supports the backrest members, and a folded position, wherein the first backrest member has seat belt upper anchorage means mounted thereon and is releasably attached to the support beam such that it can be moved into its folaed position independently of the support beam or whilst attached to it.
The support beam can therefore provide indirectly support for the seatbelt upper anchorage by supporting the seat backrest, but can also be folded down to provide maximum load carrying space in the vehicle.
The second backrest member may also be attached releasably to the support beam and be movable into its folaed position i epencently of the support beam or whilst attached to it. This allows either one of the backrest members to be kept in the in use position while the other is folded down.
The support beam can conveniently be pivotably mounted on the vehicle by means of a pair of struts.
The first backrest member may be wide enough to support two passengers. In such a case there is a particular need for a seat belt ancnorage to be attached to the backrest member.
The present invention also provides a venicle including a seat assembly according to the present invention.
The encis of the support beam are preferably releasably attachable to the body of the vehicle.
Said seatbelt anchorage means may be suitable for use by a first passenger and the vehicle may be provided with seatbelt upper anchorage means attached to the body of the vehicle suitable for a second passenger using the seat assembly.
A preferred emboaiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows part of a seat assembly according to a preferred embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 shows a support beam of the embodiment of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a rear view of the seat assembly of the embodiment of Figure 1; Figure 4 shows in detail a catch for attaching the beam of Figure 2 to the vehicle body; and Figure 5 shows in detail a catch for attaching the beam of Figure 2 to the seat backrest.
Referring to Figure 1 the seat assembly includes a vehicle rear seat 10 resigned to seat three passengers. The seat 10 is split into two unequal parts 12,14, the first of which comprises a first base member 16 and a first backrest member 18 and is wide enough to seat two passengers, and the second of which comprises a second base member 20 and a second backrest member 22 and is only wiae enough to seat one passenger. The seat belt for the centre passenger, who sits on one end of the first part 12 of the seat, is a three point seat belt 24 having an upper anchor point 26 on the upper edge 28 of the first backrest member 18, a lower anchor point 30 between the two base members 16,20 of the seat, and a catch 30 in the centre of the first part 12 of the seat between the first base member 16 and the first backrest member 18.
As can be seen most clearly in Figures 2 and 3 the seat assembly further comprises a support beam 32 extending horizontally behind the seat backrest members 18,22 near their upper edges 28,29. The support beam 32 is itself supported on two struts 34,36, one attached rigidly near each end of the beam, which are also pivotably mounted on the floor of the vehicle. At each ena of the beam 32 is pin 38,40 which is arranged for cooperation with a releasable catch mechanism 42,44 housed in the vehicle body. Three hoops 46,48,50 are mounted on the beam 32 for cooperation with releasable catch mechanisms 52,54,56, two of which are housed in the first backrest member 18 and one of which is housed in the second backrest member 22.
Referring to Figure 4 each of the catch mechanisms 42,44 in the vehicle body is of standard construction comprising a first rotatable catch member 60 with a slot 62 for engaging the pin 38,40 on the beam 32 and a second rotatable catch member 64 with a projection 66 for engaging first and second abutments 68 70 on the first catch member, the two catch members 60,64 being urged together by a spring 72 and the second catch member 64 having an operating handle 74 attached to it.
When the first catch member 60 is engaged with the pin it is held in place by the projection 66 engaging the first abutment 68. To release the catch the handle 74 is depressed to rotate the second catch member and the spring 72 rotates the first catch member 60 so as to release the pin 38,40 and allow the backrest member 18,22 to be folded forwards. When the backrest member 18,22 is returned to the in use position the catch locks around the pin 38,40.
Referring to Figure 5 the catch mechanisms 52,54,56 on the backrest members 18,22 are identical to those on the vehicle body with corresponding components indicated by the same reference numerals preceded by a 1.
The upper anchorage 26 for the seatbelt 24 comprises a retractor mechanism 80 and a guide plate 82 housed in the first backrest member 18. The guide plate 82 is fixed to a rigid sheet 84 forming part of the rear surface of the first backrest member 18 so that there is a gap batween them through which the seatbelt 24 passes. The guide plate 82 is also fixed to a support 86 for one of the catch mechanisms 54 in the first backrest member 18. Forces on the seatbelt 24 are therefore reacted through the guide member 82, the catch mechanism 54, and the corresponding hoop 48 to the beam 32.
In the embodiment shown the upper seatbelt anchorage for the centre occupant is near the end of the first backrest member 18 nearest the second backrest member. It could also be placed near the centre of the first backrest member 18 on the other side of the centre occupant, with a catch mechanism suitably placed to support it.
The upper anchorage points 90,92 for the seatbelts for the two side occupants are housed in the vehicle body next to the catch mechanisms 42,44. Therefore, even if there are three occupants of the rear seat and all the seatbelts are in use, the beam 32 only has to support the centre occupant in the event of an accident.
