Abstract

The clamp fits onto any worktop by means of a screw-type adjustable mechanism and a syringe is placed thereon as shown. A container of medicine, e.g. insulin, is placed on the exposed needle and the plunger pulled down so that an excess of medicine enters the syringe resevoir. A shim is then placed over the plunger so that when the latter is pressed up, it allows the resevoir to retain the correct amount, thereby obviating the need to read the scale. <IMAGE>

Description

COOK'S SAFETY CLAMP BACKGROUND John Cook's mother has to inject insulin into herself once a day. The dosage has to be exact and a steady hand is required to hold the needle. John's mum is in her early 70's and has slightly fading eyesight and somewhat shaky hands. She therefore needed attendance by a nurse on a daily basis until Jon invented the COOK'S SAFETY CLAMP.
PRODUCT The clamp fits onto any worktop by using a simple screw type adjustable mechanism. The syringe is placed onto the clamp as shown in fig. 1 of the diagrams below. The medicine, (2) insulin in this case, is placed on the top of the needle as in fig. 1. The plunger, (3) is pulled down so that an excess of medicine passes into the reservoir, (4). A SHIM, (5), is then place over the plunger so that when pressed up it allows the reservoir to retain exactly the correct amount of medicine thus saving the problem of having to try to read the scale on the reservoir.
BENEFIT 1. A person with fading eyesight or even total loss of eyesight can be confident of knowing tat the syringe has the correct amount of medicine.
2. A person with shaky hands can be helped enormously by steadying the syringe and bottle to enable the correct measure to be obtained.
SHIM lOmls + will be a square shim graduated up to 20mm 20mls + will be a round shim graduated up to 30mm 30mls + will be a 5 sided shim graduated up to 40mm Other quantities as required.
The shim has a groove on one side that enables it to be pus fitted onto the plunger.

Claims (13)

CLAIMS:
1. A measuring apparatus for liquid comprising a container having a body and a plunger movable therein, the movable plunger having a shaft extending externally of the body and the plunger cooperating with the body to define a variable volume chamber for liquid, restrictor means cooperating with the shaft to prevent inward movement of the plunger beyond a predetermined position of the plunger with respect to the body whereat the liquid chamber has a predetermined volume.
2. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 1 further comprising a support member for the container and means for releasably attaching the support member to a surface.
3. A measuring apparatus for liquid as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the restrictor means comprises an engaging member for engaging the shaft externally of the body, and having a dimension measured along the shaft corresponding to said predetermined position of the plunger with respect to the body.
4. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 3 wherein the engaging member is a sleeve located around the shaft, said sleeve having a slot therein to enable selective application to and removal of the sleeve from said shaft.
5. A measuring apparatus for liquid comprising a container having a body and a plunger movable therein, the plunger having a shaft extending externally of the body and the plunger cooperating with the body to define a variable volume chamber for liquid having a volume corresponding to the position of the plunger with respect to the body, a support member for the container and a shaft stop member attached to the support member and operable to engage the shaft to prevent inward movement of the plunger beyond a predetermined position whereat the liquid chamber has a predetermined volume.
6. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 5 further comprising means for releasably attaching the support member to a surface.
7. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 5 or 6 wherein the shaft stop member is pivotally mounted on an axle extending parallel to the shaft axis, the shaft stop member extending transverse to the shaft axis whereby the shaft stop member may engage the shaft at a location with respect to the support member corresponding to the predetermined position of said plunger with respect to the body.
8. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to any one of claims 5 to 7 wherein the location of engagement of the shaft by said shaft stop member is selectively adjustable whereby said predetermined volume may be selected.
9. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 8 wherein the axle is externally screw-threaded and the shaft stop means comprises a nut cooperating with the screw thread for adjustably positioning the shaft stop member along the axle.
10. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 8 wherein shaft stop member is rotatably secured to said axle, the axle is externally screw-threaded and the support member has a mating internal screw thread whereby the position of the shaft stop member with respect to the support member may be selectively adjusted by rotating the axle in the support member.
11. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to any one of claims 8-10 wherein means are provided for indicating that the shaft stop member is at a selected location corresponding to a desired predetermined volume.
12. A measuring apparatus for liquid according to claim 11 wherein said indicating means is audible.
13. A measuring apparatus for liquid constructed and arranged as described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
