Abstract

A compact divided flywheel comprises a first flywheel 2 connected to an engine and second flywheel 3 connected to a transmission via friction clutch 5 having a pressure plate 16 and a diaphragm spring 30. The spring 30 has a first swivel bearing 35, located between the spring 30 and cover 24, and a second swivel bearing 36 located between the spring 30 and the plate 16. Both bearings 35, 36 are situated radially inwardly of a portion of the spring 30 that impinges against the plate 16. The second bearing 36 is in the form of a circular ring shape disc (37, fig 2) having an integral torque transmitting leaf spring (38, fig 2) fixed, radially inwardly of bearing 36, to plate 16 by rivets 39, 40. Flywheel 3 is rotatable relative to, via a dampening device 7, and coaxial with flywheel 2. Device 7 consists of compression springs 8 and a grease filled torus 9 which lies outside the friction diameter of the clutch 5. Wall 17 of the torus has a membrane seal 18. Ventilation openings 20 and cooling ribs or air channels 21 may be provided. The flywheel may constitute a preassembled unit. <IMAGE>
