Abstract

227,758. Winkley, E. E. Aug. 26, 1924. Golf-practising appliances.- A golf practice or playing apparatus comprises a screen mounted to swing upon a support under the impact of a golf ball and co-operating with a distance register, with or without means for indicating the direction of flight and elevation of the ball. In the form shown in Fig. I a captive ball 69 is teed on a mat 77 and driven through a mesh of resilientlymounted vertical and horizontal strings 49, 71 arranged in front of a canvas screen 9. The screen is pivoted upon adjustable arms 25, and after swing- ing backwards under the impact of the ball is retained by a pawl 3') and rack 41. Graduations on the rack indicate the. distance of the drive. The direction and elevation of the drive are ascertained by observing in which mesh the tether of the ball is retained. After making a stroke, the result may be plotted on a map of the golf course by the aid of the template shown in Fig. 5. The zero 85 of the template is placed on the map over the teeing or playing point, and the central line C is arranged in the direction for a correct stroke. The position of the ball after the drive is then marked on the map through one of the perforations P according to the distance of the drive indicated on the rack 41 and to its deviation as indicated by tabs 59, Fig. 1. The player selects his clubs according to the lie of the ball as indicated on the map. The mat 77 is formed with a hole 79 to receive the ball when playing strokes from the rough. To simulate playing from a bunker or sand trap a wooden block 80, Fig. 6, is placed beneath the mat. The reverse side of the mat is used when playing from the fairway. The device may be used with a free instead of a captive ball.
