Abstract

The captured pictures are first digitised and stored on computer 1. The picture information is then compressed and the compressed information stored on server computer 2. Then when ever a user wishes to obtain the new database information he updates via the telephone line linking the user to the host computer. The access to this computer is controlled by the communications computer, computer 3. <IMAGE>

Description

THE PICTORIAL INTEFitACTIVE DATABASE UPDATED BY QUICK TRANSMISSION This invention relates to an updatable computerised database of pictures with update provided by quick transmission of the information representing the pictures, from the central 'host' computer to the remote 'user' computer.
A database of pictures is a means of storing the digital information representing pictures with a computer and defining them by catagory or catagories. This enables the pictures to be retrieved and viewed later by specifying this (these) catagory (catagories) According to the present invention there is provided a picture database with update by quick transmission of the information representing the pictures. The picture information is compressed to a very small size so that the information representing each picture can be sent electronically from the central 'host' computer to the remote 'user' computer in an acceptable time.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the 4 levels of computer are labelled and the connection betwwen them: (1) the image capture, digitiser, and compression computer which actually inputs the information onto the system, (2) the server computer which stores the information to be made available to the 'users' on the system' (3) the communications computer which regulates the output of information to the 'users' on the system, (4) the 'user' computer which calls in to the server for 'updates' and receives the information down the same telephone line.
Picture information is converted to a video signal using an input device such as a video scanner or video camera and this is transferred to the capture computer where the information is digitised and stored on the hard disc of the computer as an uncompressed TARGA file. When all the required images have been stored in an uncompressed format they are then compressed and stored in this form. The uncompressed files can then be deleted.
The compressed files are transferred to the server with the 'UPDATE' command.
The information is now ready to be accessed by the 'Users' who require the new information.
They when they use their 'UPDATE' command a signal is sent along the telephone line connecting them to the communications computer. This regulates their access to the 'host' or 'server' computer. When the connection is made, picture and/or text information is transferred along the same telephone line to the 'user' computer. The picture and/or text is now part of that 'user' database.

Claims (1)

  1. Claim 1.
There is provided a picture database with update by quick transmission of the information representing the pictures. The picture information is compressed to a very small size so that the information representing each picture can be sent electronicaiiy from the central host computer to the remote user computer in an acceptable time.
Claim 2 As in Claim 1 wherein the pictures are held on the hard disc of a computer Claim 3 As in Claim 1 or Claim 2 where the picture information is sent along an ordinary telephone line.
Claim 4 As in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the picture information is sent along a digital telephone line Claim 5 As in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the picture information is transmitted at radio wavelengths.
Claim 6 As in Claim 1 and Claim 2 wherein the pictures can be added or deleted Claim 7 As in Claim 6 wherein extra information storage devices can be connected to the system.
Claim 8 As in Claim 1 wherein the host computer is accessed by a remote 'user' computer and the 'host' information viewed by the user.
Claim 9 As in Claim 8 wherein the access is achieved using a digital telephone link between host and user.
