Abstract

In curing a repair to a bead of a tubeless tyre a pressure pad 2 and a heat pad 3 are provided around the repaired bead and around the heat pad an inflated bag 4 is held in place by a rigid frame 5 of essentially U-shape. <IMAGE>

Description

TYRE BEAD REPAIR The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for curing a tyre repair.
It is known from UK Patent Specification GB 2,240,520A to provide a tyre repair system which uses a heat pad, an inflatable bag and straps around the tyre.
Tubeless tyres present a special problem. The bead of a tubeless tyre forms an air seal between the wheel rim and the tyre, and if this becomes damaged it is difficult to provide a satisfactory repair. The present invention aims to solve this problem.
Accordingly, the invention provides a method of curing a repair in a tyre in which a heat pad is held in place by an inflatable bag and constrained by an outer restraint, characterised in that the repair to a damaged bead is cured by provision of a pressure pad and a heat pad around the repaired bead, an inflated bag around the heat pad and a rigid frame around the bag.
Use of the rigid frame enables the heat and pressure to be maintained during the curing process.
Generally the rigid frame will be constructed of a steel or aluminium material welded together or cast into a specific shape. The shape should be such that it can surround the bead and associated area of the tyre and provide a space to accommodate the air bag wrapped round in U-shape and, on its inner side, the heat pad and pressure pad also in a U-shaped configuration around the tyre section, centering on the bead area to be repaired.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings: In which: Figure 1 shows a tyre section with an assembly around it for curing a bead repair; and Figure 2 is a side elevation of the assembly.
Referring to Figure 1, a tyre wall 1 having a bead area la to be repaired has a pressure pad 2 wrapped around it in a substantially U-shaped configuration, accommodating the specific shape of the tyre, and then a head pad 3. Surrounding the heat pad is an inflatable air bag 4. The air bag 4 is maintained in position by a fabricated rigid frame 5.
The frame 5 comprises a U-shaped member formed from bent over sheet steel welded to a pair of transverse support webs 7 strengthened by a cross bar 8.
In use, the repaired area is cleaned out and filled with an uncured rubber compound. The pressure pad 2 is then wrapped around the repair area, followed by the heat pad 3, and the not yet inflated air bag 4 and they are all located within the rigid frame struture 5. The air bag is then inflated and being a U-shape locks itself into the side wall of the tyre. Once locked it continues to expand and applies an all round pressure on the repaired bead area which is adjusted to approximately 45 pounds per square inch.
The heat pad is then plugged into a control panel and is arranged to supply controlled heat at approximately 1400C.

Claims (3)

1. A method of curing a repair in a tyre in which a heat pad is held in place by an inflatable bag and constrained by an outer restraint, in which the repair to a damaged bead of the tyre is cured by provision of a pressure pad and of a heat pad around the repaired bead, an inflated bag around the heat pad and a rigid frame around the bag.
2. A method according to claim 1 in which the rigid frame is of a U-shape such that it can surround the bead and associated area of the tyre and provide a space to accommodate the air bag when wrapped in a U-shape cross-section around the tyre bead and, on its inner side, the heat pad and pressure pad is also in a U-shaped configuration around the tyre section, and is centered on the bead area to be repaired.
3. A method of curing a tyre repair substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
