Abstract

A plastic protector 14 is fitted inside a vehicle wheel 10, between the wheel and a brake disc 12, so that it covers ventilation holes 18 in the wheel and protects the disc from water and other materials which pass inwards through the ventilation holes. The protector is mainly for use while the vehicle is in transit between manufacture and sale. <IMAGE>

Description

Brake Disc Protectors The present invention relates to the protection of vehicle brake discs from the effects of water and other corrosive materials. Whilst a vehicle is in transit between the factory where it is built and the point of sale the brakes are not used much, and it is desirable to prevent them from coming into contact with water and other materials which can otherwise remain on the discs for a considerable period and cause serious corrosion.
Accordingly the present invention provides a wheel assembly for a vehicle comprising a wheel, a brake disc mounted inside the wheel, the wheel having at least one aperture therethrough for ventilation of the disc in use, and a disc protector removably attached to the inside of the wheel for protecting the disc from material passing inwards through the aperture.
Preferably the disc protector is shaped so as to lie close to the inner surface of the wheel. This keeps the space taken up by the protector to a minimum and ensures maximum clearance between the protector and the brake caliper thereby reducing the effect of heat from the caliper on the protector.
The protector preferably provides substantial closure of the ventilation apertures.
The protector may have a radially outer rim which extends axially inwards about as far as the brake disc.
The protector preferably includes retention means for engaging the inside surface of the wheel.
The retention means may be supported on a radially flexible portion of the protector and may engage the wheel frictionally or sprag into it.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a section through a wheel assembly according to the invention.
The wheel assembly comprises a wheel 10, a brake disc 12 and a disc protector 14. The wheel comprises a radial section 16 with ventilation holes 18 therethrough and a rim 20 extending axially inwards from the radially outer edge of the radial section. The inner surface of the rim is flared slightly outwards away from the radial section of the wheel.
The brake disc 12 is mounted inside the wheel in the usual way.
The disc protector comprises a substantially annular portion 24 with a rim portion 26 on its outer edge which extends substantially axially and is radially flexible.
The joint between the annular and rim portions 24,26 is a smooth curve. The end of the rim portion 26 is turned outwards so as to form a radially extending lip 28. The inner edge 29 of the annular section of the protector is turned slightly axially inwards to follow the inner surface of the wheel.
The protector 14 fits inside the wheel 10 following its inner surface quite closely, although the two are not in contact except at a few points of location. The annular portion 24 of the protector extends over the ventilation holes 18 between the wheel 10 and the brake disc, substantially closing them off, and the rim portion 26 follows the inner surface of the wheel rim 20, extending axially inwards about as far as the brake disc 12.The rim portion 26 of the disc protector is flexible and is formed such that, in its natural shape, the outer edge of the lip 28 has a diameter larger than that of the inner surface of the wheel rim 20 at the point where the two will be in contact in use. Therefore, when the protector 14 is in place in the wheel, the lip 28 is held against the inner surface of the wheel rim and friction betweenthe lip 28 and the wheel rim 20 retains the protector in place. This frictional retention is aided by the fact that the inner surface of the wheel has circumferential grooves on it which result from machining of the wheel for balancing purposes.
Because the tip of the lip 28 sprags into the inner surface of the wheel, if the protector is forced axially inwards slightly the lip 28 bends over slightly rather than slipping and the protector will not be permanently dislodged.
The protector is mounted in the wheel before the wheel is put onto the vehicle. To remove the protector it is simply torn and taken out of the wheel. This means that the wheel can remain on the vehicle. Split lines can be formed in the protector so that it can be torn easily.
Because of the flexible nature of the protector, protectors of the same size can be used for different sized wheels.
