Abstract

A container (10) for food produce comprises two stacknest rods (12) which are pivotally mounted to opposite sides of the short walls (14) of the container (10). Each stacknest rod (12) is movable between a first position in which the stacknest rod (12) extends over the top of the container and a second position in which the stacknest rod extends below the container (10). In order to stack a first container on a second container one stacknest rod (12) of the first upper container is located below the base of the first container and one stacknest rod (12) of the second lower container is located over the top of the second container. <IMAGE>

Description

CONTAINER The present invention relates to a container and particularly but not exclusively to a distribution container for storing food produce for distribution to retail outlets.
Distribution containers which are presently available are of a standard size such as 400mm x 600mm.
The containers have a base and four side walls, but are open at the top. The containers are adapted to nest inside similar containers during storage. When in use stacknest rods, which are pivotally mounted at the top edge of the long walls of the container, are moved over the top of the container so as to prevent nesting of a container stacked thereon. The stacknest rods are swung to a position away from the open top of the container when the containers are nested.
The containers of the prior art may only be stacked and/or nested with like containers. Containers of different dimensions may not be stacked or nested therewith. The present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a container comprising at least one stacknest rod, wherein the stacknest rod is movable from a first position in which the stacknest rod extends over the top of the container to a second position in which the stacknest rod extends below the base of the container.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of stacking containers, the containers each comprising two stacknest rods, wherein in order to stack a first container on a second container one stacknest rod of the first upper container extends below the base of the first container and one stacknest rod of the second lower container extends over the top of the second container.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the stacknest rods are pivotally mounted on the container, preferably substantially half way up the container walls. The stacknest rods are preferably made from metal or plastics material. The container body may be solid or perforated and is preferably made from plastics material.
In order that the present invention may be more readily understood a specific embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a plurality of containers in accordance with the invention stacked in combination with a number of larger prior art containers; and Fig. 2 shows the containers of Fig.l which have been nested.
Referring to the drawings there is shown prior art distribution containers 10 and a number of distribution containers 11 in accordance with the present invention.
The dimensions of the top of the prior art containers 10 are 400mm x 600mm. The similar dimensions of the other containers 11 is 400mm x 300mm.
Each of the containers 11 of the present invention comprise two stacknest rods 12 which are mounted by pivots 13 to opposite sides of the short walls 14 of the containers. The pivots 13 are located substantially half way up the short walls 14 and are located adjacent the end walls of the container 11. Each stacknest rod 12 is movable about the pivot 13 from a first position "A" in which the stacknest rod extends over the top of the container 11 to a second position "B" in which the stacknest rod 12 extends below the base of the container.
In order to stack the containers one rod 12 is moved into position "A" extending above the container and the other rod is moved into position "B" extending below the container. The rods generally engage recesses or ridges in the body of the adjacent containers in order to prevent relative lateral movement of the stacked containers.
When nested the stacknest rods are both directed upwardly, but do not restrict access to the top of the container. The rods are retained in this position by resilient plastic protrusions. However, it is noted that the rods may be forced over these strips when they are moved to position "B" as previously described.
It is to be understood that the above described embodiment has been made by way of illustration only.
Many modifications and variations are possible.
