Abstract
A carton for an assortment of confectionery items has a base and sides (2, 3) defining a receptacle which is open at the top. A flap member (8) is hingedly connected to a first upper edge of the receptacle, the flap member (8) carrying a key to the contents of the carton. A closure member (5) is preferably hingedly connected to a second upper edge of the receptacle. <IMAGE>
Description
Title - Packaging This invention relates to packaging, in particular to a carton for assorted confectionery articles such as chocolates.
Assortments of chocolates are commonly packaged in cartons or boxes of card. Chocolates with differing fillings or flavours have characteristic shapes or wrappers and a key is provided to enable the consumer to identify each. The key may be printed on the underside of the box lid or else on a separate card which is inserted into the carton after filling. The former approach has the disadvantage of requiring double-sided printing of the carton blank, and the latter approach complicates the production process.
There has now been devised a carton which overcomes or substantially mitigates the above-mentioned disadvantages.
According to the present invention, there is provided a carton having a base and sides defining a receptacle, open at the top, containing an assortment of confectionery items, a flap member hingedly connected to a first upper edge of said receptacle, the flap member carrying a key to the contents of the carton, and a closure member.
The carton according to the invention is advantageous primarily in that the hinged flap member, which is printed with the key to the various confectionery items, is easily formed and does not need to be inserted into the carton after filling.
The closure member is preferably hingedly connected to a second upper edge of said receptacle. Alternatively, the closure member may be a sleeve into which the receptacle is slid in a known manner.
Preferably, the flap member and the closure member are hingedly connected to opposite upper edges of the receptacle.
In the case of a rectangular receptacle, these edges are preferably the major edges.
The closure member is preferably provided with retaining means to hold it in the closed position. The closure member may, for example, have a tab which locates in a slot on the opposing edge of the receptacle.
Apart from the provision of the flap member, the carton may be of generally conventional form, eg being formed by folding a card blank.
According to another aspect of the present invention, therefore, there is provided a blank for the formation of a carton as previously defined, the blank including a portion which constitutes the flap member of the carton, on which is printed the product information.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton according to the invention, in an open condition, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of a card blank used to form the carton of Figure 1.
Referring first to Figure 1, a carton (generally designated 1) comprises a receptacle portion defined by major and minor sides (2,3 respectively) and a base (not visible). One major side 2 is hingedly connected to a lid 5. The lid 5 has a retaining tab 6 which locates in a slot 7 provided near the upper edge of the facing major side 2. Hingedly connected to that upper edge is a panel 8 which is printed with a key to the contents of the carton. Such contents may typically be an assortment of various chocolates or other confectionery items.
Figure 2 shows the card blank used to form the carton 1. Fold lines are shown dashed. The portions corresponding to the major and minor sides 2,3, the lid 5 and the panel 8 are indicated. The carton is formed by gluing a tab 21 provided on one of the minor sides 3 to the edge of the opposite minor side, the portions 22 being interfitted to form the base of the carton.
Before assembly, the blank is printed on one side with the usual product information, the panel 8 being printed with a key to the various items to be packaged in the carton.
