Abstract
A conduit length or a conduit fitting has a coating which provides electromagnetic shielding. A steel conduit comprising a channel and a cover is coated externally or internally with a point loaded with an electrically conductive material. The coating may be continuous or a mesh, and may be applied before or after assembly of the conduit parts. The joints between parts are sealed with gaskets of rubber filled with aluminium. The conduit is used for cables carrying data signals.
Description
Data Cable
Conduit Svstems This invention relates to conduit systems for cabling transmitting electrical data signals.
Unless such cabling is electromagnetically shielded the electrical data signals may be corrupted by external electromagnetic radiation sources (such as an adjacent like cable) and may be monitored externally from the electromagnetic radiation therefrom making the data unsecure.
In order to avoid these problems it is known to run such cabling in conduit systems comprising conduit lengths and fittings thereof made of aluminium, which provides electromagnetic shielding. However, such systems are expensive and an object of the present invention is to provide conduit lengths and fittings therefor which provide electromagnetic shielding but which are not so expensive as the known aluminium lengths and fittings.
To this end the invention includes a conduit length or a conduit fitting for use therewith for a conduit system for data cabling wherein the conduit length or fitting includes a coating providing the conduit length or fitting with an electromagnetic shield.
The invention also includes a method of providing a conduit length or fitting therefor with electromagnetic shielding which comprises applying a coating to the length or fitting which provides such shielding. It will be appreciated that the coating may be applied to conduit length and fittings prior to their assembly to form a conduit system, or in some circumstance to a system which has already been assembled and installed.
In order that the invention may be well understood, some embodiments thereof which are given by way of example only will now be described.
A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a steel conduit length formed in two parts - that is an open channel and a cover for closing the channel.
In order to provide the conduit with an electromagnetic shield, an alumina loaded paint is applied to the parts to form a coating thereon. The coating may extend over only the external or only the internal surfaces of the channel and over only the outwardly facing or only the inwardly facing surface of the cover.
Conduit fittings, such as a box, bend, elbow or tee, for use with conduit lengths as described above are steel fittings - each of which may be formed as one part or by more than one part - provided with an alumina loaded paint coating.
The conduit length and the fittings therefor may be internally compartmentalised by partitioning so that cables can be run in respective compartments and in this case the partitioning is preferably also made of steel and provided with an alumina loaded paint coating. Joints between the parts of the conduit lengths and the parts of conduit fittings as well as between the conduit lengths and the conduit fittings are preferably gasketted using gaskets having electromagnetic radiation shielding properties. For example, rubber or other material gaskets loaded with aluminium or other particles may be utilised.
It will be understood that the invention is applicable to cases where the conduit length and conduit fitting are formed in materials other than steel, which materials provide no or at least inadequate electromagnetic shielding.
Also, it is to be understood that the coating may be provided by means other than an alumina loaded paint. Alternatives for the coating may comprise one or more of the following: copper, silver, nickel, iron, zinc, stainless steel, chromium carbide, chromium carbon fibre, glass fibre, graphite, glass beads and manganese in a suitable carrier. Also, the coating may comprise a plastics material such as p.v.c. or a nylon which advantageously may be applied by a dipping process or by spraying. It should also be noted that whilst the coatings described above would be continuous over the surfaces to which they are applied, the coating may instead comprise a mesh applied to those surfaces.
