Description

2274724 IMPROVEMENTS IN LASER HAND PIECE
FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a laser apparatus, and more particularly to an improved hand piece thereof.
It is known that in order to focus the laser beam through the hand piece of a CO surgical laser a lens is used.
Usually a zinc selenide lens Is employed since this permits transmission of the CO beam (10.6 microns) as well as the HeNe guide light (red) which Indicates the focal point.
In most of these laser apparatuses a lens with 125 mm focal length is used. since this can be placed before the hand piece leaving enough length to enable the hand piece to be handled with comfort.
However, If a lens with a shorter focal length could be employed the spot size of the beam at the focal point would be smaller thus Increasing the energy density (watts per sq. cm) and rendering the laser more efficient.
It is thus desirable to have a laser apparatus with a short focal length.
However, due to the fact that the hand piece must be sterilisable by autoclaving (dry heat) after each operation, and this cannot be applied to the lens since the coating is destroyed by heat. the result Is that a short focal length lens cannot be incorporated into the hand piece if sterilisation by heat is required.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is thus an object of the present Invention to have a laser apparatus with a short focal length.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a laser apparatus with a lens which will not be affected by the autoclaving sterilisation.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, the lens Is replaced by metal mirrors, preferably paraboloid mirrors which can be incorporated into the hand piece making the device for laser surgery simple and more functional.
The focal length required can be determined by changing the radius of the curvature so that a short focal length can be installed as required.
3 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will now be described with reference.to the annexed drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a schematical illustration of a conventional hand piece. Fig. 2 is a schematical sectional illustration of the hand piece according to the invention. Fig. 3 is an embodiment of the hand piece.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERED EMBODIMENT
Turning first to Fig. 1 the hand piece 1 is provided with lens 2 the focal length of which is 125 mm thus the focal point (FP) 3 has a diameter of about.4mm.
As can be seen in Fig. 2 the laser beam engages a paraboloid mirror 5 which reflects the beam to a second mirror 6 mounted rearwards of mirror 5 which - in turn reflects the beam substantially in the longitudinal axis of the hand piece. to exit 7 and through it Into the open. The beam is directed at will to the point where it is desired to become active. The focal length of the mirror 5 is 5Omm or less thus the focal point (FP) has a diameter of about lmm or less.
1 b.:
- 4 The embodiment of hand piece shown in Fig. 3 illustrates a hand piece 1 where the opening 7 is off-center of mirror 5. Mirror 6 is mounted on the wall of the hand piece.
