Abstract
A machine readable magnetic card carries a hidden oxide layer randomly disposed within the structure of the card. The oxide layer carries encoded information in bar code form. The oxide layer is masked by visual representations on the face of the card.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CARDS
This invention is concerned with improvements in or relating to cards, in particular to machine readable cards with a security status.
Conventionally, such cards bear identifying data of a confidential character enabling, by proper use, access through the agency of a card reader to varying facilities which can range from the management of cash to the entry to restricted areas.
The manufacture of cards is well known and most cards of this type include a number of layers including one of oxide carried by the plastics substrate of the card, the oxide being the element detected and measured by the machine. In particular the change of flux is detected by the machine. The oxide may incorporate encoded information set at the time of manufacture. Usually, as is well known, the oxide layer runs longitudinally through the card in one of the tracks and generally its location is clearly to be seen on the card as a strip.
Fraudulent use of cards and their counterfeiting are in the ascendant and it is the object of the present invention to provide an improved card structure which will render more difficult such activities.
According to the present invention there is provided a machine readable card provided with an oxide -layer randomly disposed within the structure of the card.
The oxide layer and its disposition within the structure of the card are not visually detectable.
The oxide layer may be masked by any inscriptions which may appear on the face of the card, thus rendering its detection more difficult.
The oxide layer may carry encoded information in bar form.
The invention also includes a card reader adapted to detect and read the card.
The masking of the disposition of the oxide is conveniently effected by visual representations on the face of the card and such representations may be wording or in logo form.
The oxide may be aligned within one of the card tracks and may be encoded.
The advantage of the present invention resides in the inherent security provided by the random orientation of the oxide within the card. Any unauthorised attempt to read the card would require considerable effort and even if the location of the oxide were detected, the reading would be incoherent in the absence of the complementary card reader.
Claims (9)
1. A machine readable card provided with an oxide layer randomly disposed within the structure of the card.
2. A machine readable card according to Claim 1 in which the oxide layer is masked by an inscription appearing on the face of the card.
3. A machine readable card according to Claim 1 or 2 in which the oxide layer carries encoded information in bar form.
4. A machine readable card according to Claim 2 or 3 when dependent upon Claim 2 in which the oxide layer is masked by visual representations on the face of the card.
5. A machine readable card according to Claim 4 in which the visual representations are constituted by wording.
6. A machine readable card according to Claim 4 in which the visual representations are constituted by a logo.
7. A machine readable card according to any one of the preceding claims in which the oxide layer is aligned with a card track.
8. A machine readable card substantially as hereinbefore described.
9. A card reader adapted to detect and read a machine readable card according to any one of the preceding claims.
