Description
Fuel Container Material
This invention relates to a material for use in forming a container for fuel, particularly fuel for motor vehicles, and to a method of constructing such a material
In respect of motor vehicles to be sold after 1st January 1993, there will apply European Economic
Community (EEC) fuel permeability laws requiring emission of fuel through a fuel container or tank to be no greater than twelve parts per million per hour.
Motor vehicles for use in racing competition generally utilise flexible fuel tanks to make use, not only of the lightweight flexible materials, but also of that space which might be available in the vehicle. Such fuel tanks can be shaped to conform to individual vehicles.
Testing of presently available flexible fuel tanks has however shown that they are unlikely to comply with the new EEC laws According to the present invention there is provided a material for use in forming a container for fuel 9 the material comprising a laminated structure adapted to restrict permeability of fuel therethrough below a predetermined level.
The structure may be adapted to restrict emission of fuel vapour to no greater than twelve parts per million per hour, i.e. in accordance with the EEC fuel permeability laws for all motor vehicles to be sold after 1st January 1993.
The laminated structure may comprise a first layer for use as an outer wall, a second layer for use as an inner wall, and an intermediate, liquid impermeable layer to restrict the permeability of fuel vapour. The intermediate layer may be bonded to both the first and second layers, and preferably comprises a plastics film which is chemically etched on both sides thereof to enable bonding. The plastics film may be formed of fluorinated ethene propene (FEP).
Preferably also the second layer may comprise a plastics laminate, for example a high nitrile polyvinylchloride (PVC) compound laminate. The first layer may comprise a fabric coated with a high nitrile PVC compound, whereby the structure is flexible with a reinforced outer wall.
The present invention also provides a method of forming a material for use in a container for fuel, the method comprising the steps of forming a laminate including a layer which restricts fuel permeability therethrough to below a predetermined value.
The method may include bonding an intermediate, liquid impermeable layer between a first layer, for use as an outer wall, and a second layer, for use as an inner wall. The intermediate layer may be a plastics film, and the method may comprise chemically etching both sides of the intermediate layer to enable bonding thereof to each of the first and second layers. The bonding may be effected by applying a suitable adhesive and then subjecting the laminated structure to a curing process, which may include both a heat and a pressure operation
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which shows a cross-section through a material according to the invention
Referring to the drawing, a material for use in constructing a flexible fuel tank comprises a laminated structure 10.A first layer 12, adapted to form the outer wall of the tank, is formed of a plastics coated fabric providing strengthening for the tank, the fabric preferably being coated with a high nitrile PVC compound.
A second layer 14, adapted to form the inner wall of the tank, is formed of a laminated plastics material, and preferably the laminate is formed of a high nitrile
PVC compound which can have a thickness in the range of 0.1 mm to 1 mm.
A structure formed of the layers 12, 14 would not in itself restrict fuel vapour permeability therethrough to that required by the EEC fuel permeability laws. For this purpose, a liquid impermeable intermediate layer 16 is provided between the layers 12, 14, and comprises a plastics film which can have a thickness in the range of 0.02 mm to 0.2 mm. The plastics film is'preferably formed of fluorinated ethene propene (FEP). To enable bonding of the layer 16 to the other layers 12, 14, the
FEP film is chemically etched on both sides thereof and is bonded to the other layers 12, 14 by using suitable adhesive 18. When the adhesive 18 is applied, the laminated structure is subjected to a curing process, which includes both a heat and a pressure operation.
There is thus provided a laminated structure which meets the fuel vapour permeability requirements, by providing an intermediate plastics film and providing for suitable bonding of that film in the laminate. The layers may be formed of other suitable materials and it will be appreciated that the invention is not restricted to use with a flexible fuel tank, but can have, for example, a rigid plastics outer layer.
Various other modifications may be made without departing from the invention.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing Specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
