Abstract
227,441. Schuler Akt.-Ges., L., and Achtermann, O. Jan. 12, 1924, [Convention date]. Soldering.-In a machine for soldering the overlapping edges of the longitudinal seams of can bodies of the type in which the body is mounted on an arbor with its overlapping edges engaging lateral abutments so as to leave a, space between the edges, a strip of fluxed solder is fed in a longitudinal direction into the space, the edges then pressed together and then heated and finally cooled. A number of clamping devices are radially arranged on a ring c which is intermittently rotated round a fixed ring a to successive positions at which respectively the bodies are inserted, solder is fed and the bodies are ejected. Each clamping device consists of an arbor d having an aluminium insert t for supporting the lower edge of the body g and a bar e moved by a rotatable bolt f for supporting the upper edge of the body. The edges of the body engage lateral abutments consisting respectively of the bar e and of a bar m which is carried by the frame i and moved vertically by a lever n engaging a fixed annular cam track. At the inserting position a stationary arm p, Fig. 7 is provided having grooves r, s for receiving the edges of the body from which the body is pushed, by hand on to the arbor. At the next position solder strip is fed by rolls x from a bobbin v through a bath w of solder fat into the channel o and is cut off by cam-operated shears y. The rolls may be shaped so as to profile the solder strip so as to stiffen it. The edges during the further rotation are then clamped by a sliding bar h operated by a lever moving over a second annular can track and the bar m is at the same time lifted. The clamping devices are provided with gas burners and at this stage of rotation of the ring c the gas is put on by valves controlled by the annular cam track and ignited by a stationary pilot light so as to solder the joint and at a subsequent stage is cut off and compressed air supplied to the burners to cool the joint and when the arbor arrives at the stage immediately preceding the inserting stage the bars h and e are raised and the body ejected. As the body hangs freely from the arbor the machine may operate on cans of different diameters. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes solder in the form of wire and also states that the cans may be of circular, oval or rectangular cross-section. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
