Abstract

A toy dishwasher consists of a housing 1, 2, a reservoir, a turntable 6 in the housing on which dishes may be stacked, a fountain 7, 8, 9 for spraying water from the reservoir over the dishes on the turntable, and a drive mechanism (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19) for the turntable and fountain. The toy is very suitable for young children, being safe, inexpensive and educational. The dishwasher may have a domed transparent cover so that the washing operation can be seen. The fountain consists of a vertical pipe co-axial with the turntable and an auger in the pipe. The upper end of the pipe may be provided with a cap, with a small gap, for spraying purposes, between the upper rim of the pipe and the rim of the cap. <IMAGE>

Description

TOY DISHWASHER The present invention relates to toy dishwashers.
According to the invention there is provided a toy dishwasher comprising a housing, a reservoir for holding a liquid, a turntable in the housing on which dishes may be stacked, a fountain in the housing for drawing liquid from the reservoir and spraying the liquid over the turntable, and a drive mechanism for driving the turntable in rotation and for operating the fountain.
Thus, there is provided a toy dishwasher which meets the usual requirements for toys, that is to say a toy dishwasher which is safe, which is inexpensive, and which is attractive and educational.
Preferably the housing consists of a base and a cover which rests on the base.
Preferably the cover is a domed transparent cover.
Preferably the fountain consists of a vertical pipe co-axial with the turntable, and an auger within the pipe.
Preferably the upper end of the pipe is provided with a cap arranged so that there is a small gap between the upper rim of the pipe and the rim of the cap.
Preferably the drive mechanism comprises a single electric motor and a drive transmission for transmitting the drive of the motor to the fountain and the turntable.
The invention will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, a preferred construction of toy dishwasher. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dishwasher; and Figure 2 is a partial sectional elevation.
Referring to the drawings, the turntable comprises a base 1, a transparent domed cover 2 which rests on the base and which together with the base forms a housing, a water sink 3 in the base 1 outside the cover 2, a water sink 4 in the base 1 within the cover 2 and a connecting channel 5 so that the two sinks 3, 4 and channel 5 together form a reservoir, a turntable 6 resting on the base 1, a fountain in the form of a vertical pipe 7 containing a rotatable auger 8 and provided with a cap 9 spaced apart from the upper rim of the pipe 7, and a drive mechanism comprising batteries 10 located in a battery chamber 11, an electric motor 12 driven by the batteries 10, an electrical circuit 13 connecting the batteries 10 to the electric motor 12 and including a switch 14 for switching on and off the motor 12, an electric motor drive shaft 15 provided with a gear wheel 16 which meshes with a gear wheel 17 on a drive transmission 18 for transmitting the drive to both the turntable 6 and a vertical driven shaft 19 for driving the auger 8 in rotation.
In use, the cover 2 is lifted off the base 1, dishes are stacked on the turntable 6, and the cover 2 is replaced. Water is poured into the sink 3 and flows along channel 5 into sink 4. The tap handle 19 is then turned to operate the switch 14, and as a result the electric motor 12 is switched'on, causing the turntable 6 and auger 8 to rotate. Water is sucked up through the pipe 7 and sprayed out through the gap between the upper rim of the pipe 7 and the cap 9. The water is sprayed either directly onto the rotating dishes or alternatively against the ceiling of the domed cover 2 and then falls down onto the dishes. The water drains down through perforations 20 in the turntable 6 and down the rim of the turntable 6 and back into the sink 4. When washing has been completed, the tap handle 19 is operated to switch off the electric motor 12. The cover 2 is lifted off and the dishes are removed. The water is then poured out of the toy dishwasher.
The toy dishwasher is very suited for young children. Firstly it is safe, comprising only a simple low speed electric motor 12 powered by low voltage batteries 10. Secondly it is relatively inexpensive in that a simple and effective drive mechanism and a simple and effective water containment arrangement are offered, these being the two aspects of real dishwashers which would normally involve considerable expense. Thirdly, the toy dishwasher is educational because the entire washing process can be easily seen and understood by the child, unlike the situation with a real dishwasher where the operation cannot been seen.
A preferred material from which the dishwasher is manufactured is a plastics material. However, other materials may be used if desired.

Claims (7)

1. A toy dishwasher comprising a housing, a reservoir for holding a liquid, a turntable in the housing on which dishes may be stacked, a fountain in the housing for drawing liquid from the reservoir and spraying the liquid over the turntable, and a drive mechanism for driving the turntable in rotation and for operating the fountain.
2. A toy dishwasher according to Claim 1 in which the housing consists of a base and a cover which rests on the base.
3. A toy dishwasher according to Claim 2 in which the cover is a domed transparent cover.
4. A toy dishwasher according to any preceding claim in which the fountain consists of a vertical pipe co-axial with the turntable, and an auger within the pipe.
5. A toy dishwasher according to Claim 4 in which the upper end of the pipe is provided with a cap arranged so that there is a small gap between the upper rim of the pipe and the rim of the cap.
6. A toy dishwasher according to any preceding claim in which the drive mechanism comprises a single electric motor and a drive transmission for transmitting the1 derive of the motor to the fountain and the turntable.
7. A toy dishwasher generally as herein described, with reference to or as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
