Abstract

When drilling from a floating vessel compensation for vessel "heave" is applied to Mud Flow Indicators, thus resulting in a smooth indication of actual well head flow. This is achieved by correcting the Indicator by an amount equal to the "heave". The corrected signal can then be used to detect kicks. <IMAGE>

Description

Compensation for Mud Flow Indicators This refers to Drilling Mud flow, on Drill ships and Semi - submersibles, which are subject to vessel "heave" .
Vessel "heave", is the vertical movement of the vessel, due to external wave forces.
This "heave", influences the Mud flow in the flow line at Rig level, and causes large fluctuations. These fluctuations are also monitored by the flow indicator.
By measuring the rate and amount of vessel "heave", and using this signal to correct the external influence on the flow indicator, then only the actual well head mud flow rate is indicated, and compensation for "heave" is achieved.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
1/ Compensation for Vessel "heave" is applied to the readout indication of Mud flow indicators, therefore resulting in actual flow measrement.
2/ Flow indication on the readout is equivalent to the actual flow, and is therefore smooth and without the fluctuations inherent with uncompensated systems.
3/ Well Control scenarios can be controlled more quickly and with greater accuracy, as the Mud flow rate indicated is equivalent to actual well bore flow.
4/ Well "Kicks". and well bore pressure increases can detected more quickly.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1/ Compensation for vessel motion, is applied to the readout indication of Mud Flow Indicators, therefore resulting in actual flow measurement.
2/ Flow indication on the readout is equivalent to the actual flow, and is therefore smooth and without the fluctuations inherent with uncompensated systems.
3/ Well control scenarios can be controlled more quickly, and with greater accuracy, as the Mud Flow rate indicated is equivalent to actual well bore flow.4 4/ Well "kicks" and well bore pressure increases can be detected more quickly.
