Description

A WRAPAROUND CARTON AND BLANK THEREFOR The invention relates to a carton of the wraparound type made from paperboard or similar foldable material. Such cartons are used for packaging a plurality of articles and the invention is particularly directed to packaging necked articles such as bottles.
It is known to provide a device for securing a group of bottles together and GB 2154197 discloses various features on such a packaging device which engage the individual bottle necks in order to secure the individual bottles.
GB2154197 provides a packaging device having coaxial apertures in upper and lower panels through each of which the neck of a bottle passes. The device further comprises an array of tabs which extend from the rim of the upper aperture and abut the underside of a bottle cap in use.
GB2154197 further teaches use of larger tabs which extend from the lower panel and engage a rim on the bottle necks.
One aspect of the present invention provides a carton accommodating a plurality of articles which carton comprises a blank having hingeably interconnected top, bottom and side panels, the top panel comprising article receiving apertures which each receive a neck portion of an article packaged in the carton characterised in that an article support tab is associated with each of said receiving apertures each of which tabs abuts an adjacent article and is hinged to a side panel of the carton, said tabs acting to restrict movement of the article in the carton.
According to a feature of this aspect of the invention, said tabs may be struck at least partially from a side panel and at least partially form the top panel of the carton.
According to another feature of this aspect of the invention an inner tab and an outer tab may be associated with each receiving aperture said outer tab being that which is foldably connected to said side panel.
Preferably, the article abutting tabs engage the underside of a flange present on said neck portion of an article.
According to another feature of this aspect of the invention the side panels may each comprise an upper inclined shoulder panel to which the tabs are hingeably attached and a central panel to which the upper inclined shoulder panel is attached. Preferably, the said tab hinge is located in the upper portion of the shoulder panel. It is also a preferred feature of the invention that the tab hinge is substantially parallel to the hinge between the said shoulder panel and said central panel portion.
According to yet another feature of this aspect of the invention the article tabs have a medial portion between its hinge end and its upper, article abutting end which portion has a greater width than either of the tab ends.
In a preferred form the tabs have a polygonal shape wherein the outermost vertices are formed within said medial portion. And in a further preferred form the outermost vertices are struck from the carton proximal the hinge between the upper panel and the shoulder panel.
Additionally the tabs may have upper outermost lateral edges which are struck substantially from the carton top panel and lower outermost lateral edges which are struck substantially from said shoulder panel.
According to a still further feature of the invention said tabs may have lower outermost lateral vertices which are struck substantially from said shoulder panel.
Another aspect of the invention provides a blank of paperboard or similar foldable sheet material adapted to form a carton according to any of the immediately preceding paragraphs.
An embodiment of a carton according to the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: FIGURE 1 shows a plan view of a blank for forming a carton according to the invention; and FIGURE 2 shows a loaded carton formed from the blank shown in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a plan view of a carton blank 2 in an unfolded configuration. The blank comprises base panels 10 and 30, side panels 18 and 28, and top panel 20. The blank is substantially of a known wraparound type which can be made of foldable paperboard material, for example. To form the packaged carton 1 the blank 2 is folded around a group of bottles B and base panels 10 and 30 are locked together using known cooperating locking devices such as inter engaging tabs 32 and locking apertures 31.
The side wall panels 18 and 28 each comprise inclined upper and lower panel portions and a central panel portion. Base panel 10 is foldable interconnected to lower inclined panel portion 12 of side wall 18 along interrupted fold line 40.
Lower panel portion 12 comprises two bottle heel retaining apertures 33 of a known type. As can be seen in figure 2, the retaining apertures 33 are each engaged by the heel of a bottle B in the packaged carton. Lower side panel portion 12 is foldably connected to central side panel 14 along fold line 42. The central panel 14 is foldably joined tp inclined upper panel portion 16 along fold line 44.
Similarly side wall 28 comprises inclined lower panel 26 which is foldably connected to base panel 30 along a fold line 54 and to central side wall panel 24 along fold line 52. Lower panel portion 26 comprises bottle heel retaining apertures 33. Central side wall panel portion 24 is further foldably connected to inclined upper panel portion 22 along fold line 50. The inclined upper panel portions 16 and 22 are foldably joined to upper panel 20 along interrupted fold lines 46 and 48 respectively.
In the formed carton 1 lower panel 12 and 26 portions are caused to be inclined with respect to the vertical and apertures 33 thereby engage the heels of the bottles B, while side panel central portions 14 and 24 are substantially vertical. Upper portions 16 and 22 similarly are inclined to the vertical and tend to contour the shoulder part of the bottles B which have tapered necks.
Upper panel 20 comprises four bottle neck receiving apertures 34a, b, c and d. As can be seen in figure 2 the necks of bottles B protrude through apertures 34 in the packaged carton. Blank 2 further comprises article engaging tabs 38a-d and 36a-d. Outer tabs 38a, b, c and d are struck from the blank 2 and foldably connected to one of the upper panel portions 16 or 22 along fold lines 37a d respectively. As can be seen from the plan view of blank 2 in figure 1, tabs 38 are an irregular hexagonal shape wherein the outermost lateral vertices 60 (with respect to the longitudinal axis of the carton) of the tab 38 lie substantially on the fold line between the top panel 20 and the respective upper side panel 16 or 22.
Alternatively, the outermost vertices 60 may be struck from either side of the fold lines 44 or 48; that is from the upper panel 20 or bevel strips 16 or 22 as well as from that part of the blank-adjacent the fold line between these panels. However, the shape of the tabs 38 may also be other than regular polygons but it is envisaged that the tabs should be of a suitable structural shape to withstand any reasonable forces exerted on the tab through its ends without collapsing in use. Inner tabs 36 a-d are struck from upper panel 20 along fold lines 35 a-d respectively.
To form the completed package, upper panel 20 is applied to a 2 x 2 grouping of bottles, so that the bottle tops pass through apertures 34. Tabs 36 and 38 are caused to fold upwardly about their respective fold lines by the action of the article tops. The tabs have an inherent resilience, and thereby tuck beneath the protruding flanges F of the bottles B. The blank is then folded around the bottle group and base panel portions 10 and 30 are folded inwardly, into engagement with the underside of the bottles B. The base panel portions 10 and 30 are overlapped and locked together using the locking means 31 and 32 previously described. In so doing upper panel portions 16 and 22 form shoulder panels which abut the tapering necks of the bottles B and from which shoulder panels each of the outer tabs 38 extend into abutment with the neck of a respective bottle B on the underside of its neck-flange F.
The carton 1 is therefore most suitable for use with articles B having a neck flange F such as the annular flanges of the bottles shown in Figure 2. In the formed carton the aperture 34 lies beneath the flanges F about the neck portion of the bottles B. The neck and flange of bottles B are engaged by tabs 36 and 38. The flanges thereby act to restrain movement of the bottle B within the carton 1. Of particular advantage is the cooperation of outer tabs 38a-d with the 'outside' portions of the bottle flanges F in helping to stabilize the package by assisting in the retention of the bottles B within the carton 1.
While the bottles B shown here have a large flange F around their neck it is possible for the configuration of apertures 34 and tabs 36 and 38 to be altered to suit different necked articles. For example outer tab 38 could engage the underside of a bead or rim on the neck, or alternatively beneath a bottle cap itself.
