Abstract

A boom for a sail rig which has two portions 10, 12 articulated at 14 with respect to one another. The portion 10 may be connected to a mast 11, which may be rotatable. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO BOOMS This invention relates to a boom for a sail rig.
According to one aspect of the present invention a boom for a sail rig has two portions articulated to one another.
In one arrangement one of the portions is adapted to be pivotally connectable to a mast.
In a conventional rig, a mainsail in normal use would be hauled towards the outer end of the boom and secured.
Should a fuller sail be required the out haul will be released and the degree of curvature or camber would depend upon the construction of the sail itself.
With a boom according to the present invention such a change in camber would be possible irrespective of and/or in addition to the camber built into the sail by the sail maker. The control would be varied and positive.
In another construction the boom may be adapted to be rigidly connected to a mast which is rotable. Such an arrangement is described in my Patent No. 2 229 984.
In another aspect of the present invention a sail rig incorporates a boom as set forth above.
With a boom having two portions articulated to one another and the articulation being spaced from the mast this allows the outer portion of the boom spaced from the mast to pivot in an arc of selected radius. This achieves the same result as set forth in that Patent, ie lateral movement of the sails and reduction in the chord length.
The arrangement is also particularly suitable as an alternative for the means permitting lateral movement of the mainsail and foresail as set forth in that patent. It may for example replace the rhombus shape frames adjacent the ends of the respective booms over which means attached to the sails can slide and also may replace arcuate shaped frames adjacent the ends of the respective booms over which the means attached to the sails can slide.
The invention may be briefly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 - is a diagrammatic view of a boom according to the present invention and Figure 2 - is an alternative construction In the construction shown in Figure 1, a boom has a portion 10 which is rigidly attached to a mast 11 and is articulated at 12 to a second portion 13. The sail is represented by 14 and the spacing indicated by 15 between a centerline 16 and the sail 14 shows the sail camber.
In an alternative construction shown in Figure 2, the parts are similarly numbered except that the portion 10 is articulated at 17 to the mast 11.

Claims (5)

1. A boom for a sail rig which has two portions articulated with respect to one another.
2. A boom as claimed in Claim 1, in which one of the portions is adapted to be pivotally connectable to a mast.
3. A boom as claimed in Claim 1, in which one of the portions is adapted to be rigidly connected to a mast which is rotatable.
4. A sail rig incorporating a boom as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 3.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. A sail rig having a boom with two portions articulated to one another with the articulation being spaced from the mast and arranged so that the outer portion spaced from the mast can pivot in an arc of selected radius to provide lateral movement of the sails and a reduction in chord length.
2. A rig as claimed in Claim 1, in which the inner portion adjacent the mast is rigidly fixed to the mast.
3. A rig as claimed in Claim 1, in which the inner portion adjacent the mast is articulated with respect to the mast.
4. A rig as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 3, in which the mast is rotatable.
5. A boom for a sail rig as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4.
