Abstract
A three-pin BS 1363 plug comprises: a base A; a lid B slidable on the base A and engaging stops D of the base A; and a lever R pivoted at P to the base and having an extension F abutting the lid B at C, releasably to prevent removal of the lid. The lever R may he latched to the base A to prevent inadvertent release of the lid B, figs 3 to 5 (not shown). <IMAGE>
Description
13amp 240v three pin plug with lockable slidable lid
The present invention relates to the field of electrical connectors, and in particular to 13 amp 240v three pin plugs, and refers to GB 2 237 694 A by the same applicant. In the application cited a slidable lockable plug lid is described, wherein the said lid is releasably locked in situ by means of a lever mounted on a pivot in the body of the plug which engages, by means of a hook at the one end, on an appropiately sited extension of the plug lid, and at the other, by means of a lateral extension with the plug base. To do so it distorts the lever laterally as it is rotated to lock the lid, and, on arriving at the locked position, resumes it's normal shape, the lateral extension having arrived in a space to accomodate it, so securing the lid in situ.
In the present invention a further embodiment is described, wherein the said hook means is eliminated, so simplifying the construction of the said lid means, and the tooling required to manufacture the same. Figure 1 is a plan view on the underside of the plug base, showing at R the locking lever, and at N, E, & BR<
L the Neutral, Earth and Live pins of the plug. Figure 2 is a section through the said locking lever on the axis X - X in
Figure 1. At R is the said lever, at P it's pivot pin. The plug base may be seen at A, and the lid means at B. The lever end may be seen engaged upon an extension of the said plug lid, C, which slidably engages a co-operative portion of the the said base means A at D. At the other end the said lid means has two symmetrically placed extensions, E, formed as tapered pins, which engage co-operative apertures in extensions of said the plug base means. At F an extension of the lever ftrms a bulb,
G, which acts as an ejector, as may be seen in Figure 3, which is a scrap section on the same axis, showing, as a dotted line, the arc described by the said bulb, F, to engage the said extension, G . The obverse face of the lever end is shown in a scrap elevation at O, an end view on the left hand end of the lever as seen in P. At Figure 4 is a scrap section through the plug base showing the the manner in which the said lever engages the said plug base when locked. At Figure 5 is a scrap section through the disengaging means, showing the slot in the said plug base wherein a disengaging tool, a lever of any sort that can enter the aperture provided, may be inserted to push the lever clear of the base, and which when turned will engage in the penknife like slot seen at Q, so rotating the lever. In the present invention the said lever may be used to press the said plug lid means into the closed position on the plug base, wherein, on correct assembly, the one part is co-operatively engaged in the other, and likewise used to press the said lid means clear of the said co-operative base means whereon the the said lid is fitted as above described, so releasing the said lid. The mechanical advantage gained by the use of the said lever is of benefit to those with impaired hands, since it reduces the effort required to fit or remove the plug lid
Claims (2)
- CLAIMS 1. The employment, in a 240v 13amp three pin electrical connector whose pins are laid out according to BS 1363, of a construction means whereby a first part, a plug base means, has a slidably engaged second part, a plug lid means, dis-engagably slidden thereonto, and slidably connected thereto through cooperative engaging means, to stops preventing further movement in the same plane when properly engaged, and which is held thereat by a radially movable lever mounted on the first part, one end of which is abutted against an extension of the second part, and which second part may be pressed into the said locked position by the radial movement of the lever, whose further end is deflected laterally in the process of closing, through the said lateral extension slidably engaging the said first part, to spring back laterally into it's normal undeflected shape upon the said lateral extension springing into and engaging an indent in the said first part, so shaped as to secure the said lever in the locked position, substantially as described with reference A to figures 2, 3, & 4 of the accompanying drawings.
- 2. A locking means according to claim 1 wherein the said radially movable lever has upon the upper side of that end which abuts against the extension of the said second part when the same is secured shut, an extension which, when the said lever is dis-engaged, and rotated to release the said first part from the said second part, engages a further extension of the said second part with the said extension upon the said lever, so pressing the said second part into a dis-engaged state, so acting as an ejector.
