Description

Safetv Anchor This invention relates to an anchoring device, and in particular to a safety anchor to which a harness/rope or the like may be attached so as to allow personnel wearing the harness/rope to safely move about the surface of a roof while undertaking remedial work or the like.
Anchoring devices presently known suffer from a number of problems. A first known type of anchoring device is affixed to the ridge of a roof in place of a roof tile(s). A problem with this type of anchoring device is that personnel are required to ascend to the roof ridge and attach the harness/rope.
This ascent is unsafe since during such the person is not attached/anchored to the roof and might, therefore, fall from the roof.
A second known type of anchoring device is that which is affixed to an inclined surface of a roof. Problems with known devices of this type include strength of anchorage, ease of installation, sealing of the roof surface surrounding the device and expense.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate at least some of the problems/disadvantages in the prior art hereinbefore described.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an anchoring device for use on a roof providing a plurality of beams and an external roof covering, the device comprising a first elongate member for attachment to each of and between at least two beams and a second elongate member, a first end of which, in use is connected to the first elongate member and a second end of which is connected to anchoring means which, in use, extends outwardly through the roof covering such that the anchoring means are located externally of the roof.
The first elongate member may be adapted to be attached to each of and substantially transversely between two adjacent substantially parallel beams, in use.
The first elongate member may be adapted to be attached to an underside of each of the at least two beams.
The first elongate member may have a hole extending therethrough suitable for accepting a portion of the first end of the second elongate member which first end has an external threaded portion which, in use, extends on either side of the hole and is capable of accepting a nut(s) on either side so as to rigidly retain the first and second elongate members together.
The first elongate member may be made from mild steel.
The first end of the second elongate member may be made from mild steel, and the second end of the second elongate member may be made at least partially from stainless steel.
The anchoring means may be made from stainless steel.
In the situation where the roof covering comprises sarking, the anchoring device may further provide a first plate which, in use, is suitably held in association with the second end of the second elongate member and in abutment with an underside of the sarking.
The anchoring means may be in the form.of a ring, and a second plate may be provided at the second end of the second elongate member.
In the situation where the roof covering comprises sarking one or more spacer washers may be provided on the second end of the second elongate member external of the roof covering, in use, and an edge(s) of a roof tile(s)/slate(s) or the like accepted between an uppermost surface of an uppermost spacer washer and a lowermost surface of the second plate by suitable choice of the number of spacer washers and suitably adjusting the second end of the second elongate member is external of the roof.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an elongate member adapted for use as the first elongate member of the anchoring device according to the first aspect of the invention.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided an elongate member adapted for use as the second elongate member of the anchoring device according to the first aspect of the invention.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of anchoring a person/article to a roof comprising attaching the person/article to a first end of a rope or the like and attaching a second end of the rope or the like to an anchoring device provided on the roof, the roof providing a plurality of beams and an external roof covering, the device comprising a first elongate member for attachment to each of and between at least two beams and a second elongate member, a first end of which, in use is connected to the first elongate member and a second end of which is connected to anchoring means which, in use, extends outwardly through the roof covering such that the anchoring means are located externally of the roof.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a cross-sectional end view of a roof having an anchoring device according to the present invention.
Referring to Fig 1 there is illustrated a portion of a roof, generally designated 5, providing a plurality of rectangular timber beams or joists 10, the beams 10 being displaced substantially parallel to one another and adjacent beams 10 being disposed at substantially equal centres from one another. The roof 5 further provides an external roof covering 15 suitably affixed to external edges of the beams 10. The covering 15 comprises timber sarking 20 having an external roofing finish 25 such as tiles or slates on an external surface of the sarking 20.
There is also illustrated -an anchoring device, generally designated 30, for use on such a roof 5, the device 30 comprising a first elongate member 35 for attachment to each of and substantially transversely between two adjacent beams 10',10", and a second elongate member 40, a first end 45 of which, in use, is connected to the first elongate member 35 and a second end 50 of which is connected to anchoring means 55 which, in use, extends outwardly through the roof covering 15 such that the anchoring means 55 are located externally of the roof 5.
In this embodiment the first elongate member 35 is in the form of an L-shaped angle bracket for added strength, there being provided at either end thereof a first hole 60l,60lw, the first holes 60',60" being spaced from one another at a distance substantially equal to that of the spacing of the centres of the adjacent beams 101,10!!.
Coach bolts or the like (not shown) may be inserted through the first hole 60',60" and screwed into the lowermost ends of the beams 10',10" in order to retain the first elongate member 35 on and substantially transversely between each of the adjacent beams 10',10t'.
Provided substantially midway between the first hole 60s,60Xw is a second hole 65 suitable for accepting the first end 45 of the second elongate member 40 therethrough. The first end 45 has a first externally threaded portion 70, which first portion 70, in use, extends on either side of the second hole 65 thereby facilitating the provision of a washer 75 and a nut 80 on either side of the first elongate member surrounding the second hole 65.
In this way the first and second elongate members 35, 40 are rigidly retailed in association with one another, in use.
A first plate 95 is provided, which first plate 95 has a substantially central hole 100 and which, in use, is affixed to an inner surface of the covering 15 by a plurality of coach bolts or the like (not shown) which pass through a corresponding plurality of peripheral holes 105 on the first plate 95. The first plate 95 is so located so that the central hole 100 is substantially aligned with a hole 90 in the covering 15.
The second end 50 of the second elongate member 40 has a second externally threaded portion 85, which second portion 85, in use, extends on either side of the aligned holes 90, 100.
This arrangement facilitates the provision of a washer 110 and nut 115 on an inner surface of the first plate 95 and one or more spacer washers 120 on an outer surface of the sarking 20.
The anchoring means 55 comprise a ring, an edge 125 of which is integrally connected to the second end 50 of the second elongate member 40.
A second plate 130 is provided at or near the edge 125 of the anchoring means 55, which plate 130 is substantially perpendicular to the second elongate member 40.
In use, an edge(s) of a roof tile(s)/slate(s) 25 or the like is/are accepted and rigidly held between an uppermost surface of an uppermost spacer washer 120 and a lowermost surface of the second plate 130 by suitable choice of the number of spacer washers 120 and suitable adjustment of the amount by which the second end 50 of the second elongate member 40 protrudes proud of the sarking 15.
The embodiment of the invention hereinbefore described is given by way of example only, and is not meant to limit the scope of the invention in any way.
