Abstract

227,221. Devlin, C. E., and Jones, A. J. Oct. 19, 1923. Change-giving apparatus. - A change-giving apparatus which may be used with gas meters and other coin-freed apparatus, comprises a storage tube 13, Fig. 6, into which pennies are delivered and piled after freeing the gasmeter or the like. The pennies are caught between two pivoted counterweighted plates 88, 29 and are fed forward one at a time over a balanced plate 92 to the tube 13. When the tube becomes full the surplus pennies tilt the plate 92 and drop to the usual receptacle in the bottom of the . meter casing. After insertion of either a. sixpence or a shilling in a single slot, a plate 21 mounted eccentrically on a vertical shaft 20 is rotated six or twelve times to sweep out pennies from the tube. 13 through a lateral opening 15. to a delivery opening 101, Fig. 2, having a pivoted metal flap 103 to direct the coins into a cylindrical receptacle 102. The front and base of the receptacle are cut away at 105 and 106 respectively to allow the pile to be easily removed between two fingers. The shaft 20 is rotated by a crank handle 22 through bevel gears 24, 25. The handle 22 is also geared through pinions 26, 28, Fig. 7, to a pinion 27 rotatable on a fixed shaft 29 and carrying a cam 47 normally locked by a prong 53 of a pivoted locking arm 49 engaging a notch 48 therein. Backward rotation of the handle 22 is prevented by a pawl 112 engaging a ratchet 110 on the handle shaft. The arm 49 has a second prong 52 whereby it can be moved by hand to release the cam 47 and allow the tube 13 to be cleared by a collector. Coin action, mechanical-connection and with delivery proportionate to value of coin.-A sixpence inserted in a shoot 6 is arrested between a fixed stop 56, Fig. 7, and a projection 57 on the arm 49. An arm 55 is turned by an outside knob to force the sixpence down thereby moving the arm 49 to free the cam 47 and the delivery handle 22. During the delivery of six pennies the cam 47 makes one revolution and moves the arm 49 further to allow the sixpence to drop, the cam finally becoming relocked. In the case of a shilling, which is inserted in the same shoot 6, during the delivery of the first six pennies it drops past the projection 57 but is arrested by a fixed pin 60 and a pin 59 on an arm 58 attached to the locking arm 49. Towards the end of the first revolution of the cam 47 it drops between a second abutment 63 on the arm 49 and a fixed abutment 61 thereby preventing the prong 53 from locking the cam 47, which is free for a second revolution while the remaining six pennies are delivered. Returning coin.-If the storage tube 13 contains less than twelve pennies, the coin of higher value inserted in the shoot 6 is deflected by a projection 39, Fig. 6, on a spring-controlled lever 36 which then enters the tube, and is returned by a. shoot 8. Fitting and securing to walls and other supports; money boxes or receivers.-The apparatus is fitted in the usual coin box opening of a gas meter by an upper fixed hook 80, Fig. 2, and a lower hook 77, Fig. 8, which slides on a screw 74 and is locked by means of a knob 78 engaging a hole 79 in the cash drawer 70. The drawer 70 is secured by a lock 72.
