Abstract

The invention relates to a releasable connection between two members such as a seat or chair 2 and a footrest 3 therefor. The footrest 3 is releasable from the seat by releasable mounting means 5, 6 and a device 7 movable between a position to urge the mounting means 5, 6 into engagement, and a release position of the mounting means. In the embodiment illustrated, the releasable mounting means 5, 6 and 7 comprises a spigot and socket arrangement, the socket part of the arrangement comprising two substantially parallel arms 8 each having an enlarged part 9 with a through hole forming the socket. The spigot part of the arrangement comprises two spaced arms 11 each having an enlarged part 10 with an oppositely directed spigot or peg 13 of complementary shape to that of the holes 10. <IMAGE>

Description

A CONNECTION The invention relates to a connection, particularly a releasable connection between two members, particularly a seat or chair and a footrest therefor.

A connection embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of part of a seat or chair with a footrest, including a connection therebetween according to the invention; Fig. 2 shows an enlarged perspective view of part of the connection in one position; Fig. 3 shows an enlarged perspective view of part of the connection in a second position; and Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of another part of the connection according to the invention.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a releasable connection 1 between two members, in the embodiment a seat or chair 2, and a footrest 3 therefor.

It is often desirable to provide for release of the footrest 3, and to this end the seat 2 and the footrest 3 include releasable mounting means 5, 6 and a device 7 movable between a position to urge the mounting means into engagement (Fig. 3) and a release position thereof (Fig. 2).

The releasable mounting means comprises a spigot and socket arrangement, the socket part of the arrangement comprising two substantially parallel arms 8 each having an enlarged part 9 with a through hole 10 forming the socket.

The spigot part of the arrangement comprises two spaced arms 11 each having an enlarged part 12 with an oppositely directed spigot or peg 13 of complementary slope to that of the holes 10. Mounted between the arms by snap-engagement of pins 14 in holes 15 in the arms 11 is an L-shaped pivot member 16 with a finger grip 17. There is a latch mechanism comprising pins 18 and blind holes 19 of the enlarged parts 12 of the arms 11.

In use to mount the footrest 3 on the seat 2 the arms 11 are slid between the arm 8 so that the pegs 13 engage in the holes 10. The device 16 is then pivoted down to the Fig. 3 position from the Fig. 2 position so that arms 11 are made rigid in the sense that they cannot be flexed towards one another.

The pins 18 are in holes 19 in this position. The footrest 3 can now be pivoted about the knuckle joint formed by the pegs 13 and holes 10. To remove the footrest 3 from the seat it is merely necessary to pivot the device 7 upwardly, counter to the direction of arrow X in Fig. 2 so that the arms 11 may be flexed toward one another or pinched together under finger pressure in the direction of arrow Y, Fig. 2, thereby releasing the pegs 13 from the holes 10 in one movement so that the arms 11 can be withdrawn from between the arms 8, and the footrest 3 can be removed from the chair 2.

The arms 8, 11 and device 7 may be moulded from a suitable material such as resin.

Claims

1. A releasable connection between two members, comprising complementary releasable mounting means of the members and footrest, and a device movable between a position to urge the mounting means into engagement, and a release position thereof.

2. A releasable connection between a footrest and a seat, comprising complementary releasable mounting means of the seat and footrest, and a device movable between a position to urge the mounting means into engagement, and a position for release thereof.

3. A connection according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, the complementary releasable means comprising a spigot and socket arrangement.

4. A connection according to Claim 3, the spigot part of the arrangement comprising two spaced resilient arms each having oppositely facing spigots and the socket part of the arrangement comprising two spaced resilient arms each bearing a socket in which a respective spigot can engage.

5. A connection according to Claim 4, the sockets comprising a through hole in each arm.

6. A connection according to Claim 4 or Claim 5 when dependent on Claim 2, the arms bearing the sockets comprising part of the seat and the arms bearing the spigots comprising part of the footrest.

7. A connection according to any preceding claim, the device comprising a detent pivotably mounted in one of the members.

8. A connection according to Claim 7, the device comprising a substantially L-shaped member.

9. A connection according to Claim 7, when dependent on Claim 6, the L-shaped member being snap-engageable in the arms mounted on the footrest.

10. Areleasable connection, substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

11. A seat and footrest, including a connection according to any preceding claim.
