Abstract

An indoor illuminated display sign comprises a display panel 2 of acrylic material bearing an advertising indicia or logo. A light source in the form of a fluorescent tube is mounted in a housing 5 which has an opening (11 Figure 1) for engaging a longitudinal edge of the panel 2. The housing 5 also has a groove (25) to receive mounting studs 30. The stud 30 has a transverse opening (36) for receiving a suspension cord 35 and a longitudinal hole (33) receives a grub screw which extends into the opening (36) to engage the suspension cord 35. Light source housings 5 may be mounted on two opposed longitudinal side edges of the panel (Fig. 6). <IMAGE>

Description

"A Sign" The invention relates to signs and in particular to an illuminated indoor display sign particularly for carrying advertising, indicia or logos.
According to the invention, there is provided an illuminated indoor display sign comprising a translucent display panel having advertising indicia thereon and a housing for a light source, the housing having panel mounting means at an edge of the display panel to illuminate the advertisrng indicia.
In one embodiment of the invention the housing includes housing mounting means for mounting the housing to a fixture. Typically the housing mounting means comprises an elongate groove for slidably receiving one or more mounting studs. The studs may have means for receiving a suspension cord or the like.
In one embodiment of the invention the means for receiving a suspension cord comprises a main body part having an opening for receiving a suspension cord and a hole through which a grub screw is inserted into the opening to retain the cord in position in the stud. Preferably the opening for receiving a suspension cord extends transversely through the main body part and the hole for receiving a grub screw extends longitudinally into the opening.
In a preferred arrangement the housing comprises a tubular member having end caps, the tubular member having a panel mounting opening extending longitudinally of the tubular member and the tubular member includes an elongate groove for receiving one or more mounting studs. Preferably the light source comprises a fluorescent tube which is mounted in the tubular member.
Typically, the tubular member is closed by end caps and the tubular member includes mounting locations for receiving the end caps. Preferably, the tubular member is of extruded material.
In one embodiment of the invention light source housings are mounted along two opposed side edges of the panel such as to opposed longitudinal side edges of the panel.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a side partially cross-sectional view of an illuminated indoor display sign according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a display panel part of the sign; Fig. 3 is a side view of part of the housing of the sign; Fig. 4 is an end view on a reduced scale of an end cap for the housing; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a mounting stud used in the display sign; and Fig. 6 is a plan partially cross sectional view of another illuminated indoor display sign according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 to 5 there is illustrated an indoor illuminated display sign according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1. The display sign 1 comprises a display panel 2 of translucent material, in this case acrylic material, on which an advertising indicia or logo 3 is reverse engraved, inscribed or printed. The sign 1 also includes an elongate housing 5 which is typically of extruded tubular aluminium construction having end caps 6.
The end caps are attached to the tubular member by fixing screws (not shown) which are fitted through holes 7 in the end caps to engage mountings 8 in the tubular member 5.
Mounted within the housing c is a light source, in this case a fluorescent tube 10, from which light is directed to the display panel 2 to illuminate the advertising indicia thereon. The housing 5 includes an elongate opening 11 for an edge of the panel 2. The panel is provided with mounting pins 20 which extend across the opening 11 and are retained in position in the housing 5 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The housing 5 also includes an elongate groove 25 for receiving a mounting means or for directly mounting the housing to a fixture such as a wall, ceiling or the like.
In the particular case illustrated, the grove 25 is arranged to receive a pair of spaced-apart mounting studs 30 having an enlarged head portion 31 which is retained in the groove 25 and a main body part 32 having a transversely extending opening 36 for a suspension cord 35 and a longitudinal hole 33 through which a grub screw (not shown) is inserted to fix the suspension cord 35 in position in the stud 30. The studs are readily easily slidably moved along the groove 25 to a desired location.
The housing 5 may be mounted in any desired position relative to the display panel 2. Referring to Fig. 6, housings 5 may be provided on opposed elongate side edges of a panel 2 so that light is directed onto the advertising logo on the panel 2 from opposite sides. The display sign is in this case supported by suspension cords passing through the openings 36 in the mounting studs 30.
The studs 30 may be fixed in position in the grooves 25 of the housings 5 in an suitable manner, for example by a screw inserted into the groove 25 to lock the stud 30 into position.
Many variations on the embodiments of the invention described will be readily apparent and accordingly the invention is not limited to the embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in both construction and detail.
