Abstract
A litter bin is provided with a lid (13) which houses a water reservoir (15) and means for discharging the water from the reservoir into the bin in the event of fire within the bin. The discharging means may comprise conventional sprinkler valves (17a, 17b) which are activated by heat. <IMAGE>
Description
LINER BIN
This invention concerns a litter bin.
Public litter bins in airports, shopping precincts and the like, are often made from plastics material making them cheap to produce, install and maintain. A problem, however, is that the general public tend to use such litter bins for disposal of cigarette butts. Occasionally the cigarattes are not properly extinguished and, due to the presence of paper litter inside the litter bin, catch fire. The resulting fire produces noxious fumes, destroys the plastic litter bin and may spread further.
The present invention provides a litter bin which overcomes, at least to some extent, the problem aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided a litter bin having a lid incorporating a water reservoir and means for discharging the water from the reservoir into the bin in the event of fire within the bin.
The litter bin may be comprised of plastics material.
The means for discharging the water from the reservoir into the bin may comprise conventional sprinkler valves which are activated by heat.
There may be an access point to the water reservoir of the litter bin to enable it to be re-filled.
The access point may comprise a recess in the lid of the litter bin with a sealable port to the water reservoir.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, one form of the litter bin embodying same.
Of the drawings;
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the
litter bin;
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal cross section
through the lid of the litter bin of
figure 1; and
Figure 3 shows the underside of the lid.
Referring now to the drawing it will be seen that the litter bin 11 comprises a body 12 and lid 13.
The body 12 has an opening 14 for the acceptance of litter. The lid 13 is hollow to define a reservoir 15 containing water 16. Conventional sprinkler valves 17a, 17b are located on the underside of lid 13, pointing downwardly into the body of the bin.
In the event of a fire within the bin 11, the resultant heat activates sprinkler valves 17a, 17b which discharge water 16 into the body of the litter bin 11 to extinguish the fire rapidly and prevent toxic fumes escaping, the litter bin from being destroyed and the fire from spreading any further.
The reservoir 15 may be refilled via sealable port 18 located in recess 19 in the underside of the lid 13 of the litter bin for re-use.
The lid 13 is mounted on the body 12 via inserts 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d located on the base of lid 13 mating with corresponding indents (not shown) on the body of the bin 11.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible without departing from the scope thereof.
