Abstract

A self-retracting door restraint comprising a retracting assembly (1), a belt (2), belt-catch (3), and a receiving bracket (4). To use the door restraint the belt-catch is engaged with the receiving bracket. Now, as the door opens the belt unwinds. When it is fully unwound the door is restrained from opening any further. Similarly, as the door closes the belt rewinds. Disengaging the belt-catch from the receiving bracket leaves the belt free to rewind and the door free to open. An electronic circuit sounds an alarm if the belt remains fully unwound for more than a preset time. An alarm is also sounded if the belt completely rewinds into the retracting assembly, without being prevented from doing so by the belt-catch, such as would happen were the belt to be cut or broken. <IMAGE>

Description

SELF - RETRACTING DOOR RESTRAINT This invention relates to a self-retracting door restraint.
Door restraints are used to prevent a door opening more than a fixed distance. A common type of restraint is the basic door chain which comprises a chain that is fixed to the door frame and a receiving bracket that is fixed to the door. The free end of the chain can be slotted into the far end of an horizontal aperture in the receiving bracket. As the door is opened the chain end is pulled along until it reaches the end of the aperture and then the door is restrained from opening any further.
The chain type of door restraint can be cheap, but is often considered unsightly, and is impractical to use when the door is situated in a narrow hallway.
This invention relates to a self-retracting door restraint comprising a retracting assembly, a belt, belt-catch, and a receiving bracket. The retracting assembly incorporates a spool under tension around which the belt is wound. One end of the belt is securely attached to the spool and the other end is terminated in a catch suitable for engaging with the receiving bracket. The retracting assembly and receiving bracket are securely fixed opposite to each other; one on the door frame, or adjoining wall, and the other on the door.
SELF-RETRACTING DOOR RESTRAINT A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example. This example relates to a self-retracting door restraint which sounds an alarm if the belt remains fully unwound for more than a preset time, or when the belt completely rewinds into the retracting assembly, without being prevented from doing so by the belt-catch, such as would happen were the belt to be cut or broken. Reference should be made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an overview of the retracting assembly, belt, belt-catch, and receiving bracket.
Figure 2 shows the spool, and the fixing holes for attaching the retracting assembly.
Figure 3 shows the receiving bracket and it's fixing holes.
Figure 4 shows the housing cover for the retracting assembly detailing the slot through which the belt travels.
Figure 5 shows the spool mechanism, electronics assembly, alarm sounder, and battery.
Figure 6 shows a view of the sensing switch locations.
SELF-RETRACTING DOOR RESTRAINT As illustrated in Figure 1 , the restraint comprises a retracting assembly (1), a belt (2), belt-catch (3), and receiving bracket (4). The retracting assembly is fixed using screws through holes (5) and (6) and (10) while the receiving bracket is fixed opposite to it using screws through holes (7) and (8), as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
To use the door restraint the belt-catch (3) is engaged with the receiving bracket (4). Now, as the door opens the belt (2) unwinds. When it is fully unwound the door is restrained from opening any further.
Similarly, as the door closes the belt rewinds. Disengaging the belt-catch from the receiving bracket leaves the belt free to rewind and the door free to open. The belt travels through a slot (14) in the housing cover (15) of the retracting assembly, as shown in Figure 4. The belt is prevented from completely rewinding into the retracting assembly by the belt-catch which is too large to travel through this slot.
As shown in Figures 5 and 6, the alarm function of this selfretracting door restraint is realised by sensing switches (11) and (12), an electronic assembly (18), and sounder (13) which are powered by a user replacable battery (17). When the belt is unwound to its fullest extent the constant force spring orientation engages the limit switch (11). When this switch is engaged for longer than a preset time an alarm is generated.
Should the belt be cut or broken, then the belt-catch will not prevent the belt from completely rewinding into the retracting assembly. This will cause the spring to uncoil and engage the fault switch (12) which, in turn, will cause the alarm to sound.

Claims (6)

  1. SELF-RETRACTING DOOR RESTRAINT
CLAIMS 1. A self-retracting door restraint comprising a retracting assembly, a belt, belt-catch, and a receiving bracket.
  2. 2. A self-retracting door restraint as claimed in Claim 1 where the belt is made out of woven or linked steel.
  3. 3. A self-retracting door restraint as claimed in any preceding claim which incorporates the sensing switches, electronics, and sounder necessary to generate an alarm on sensed conditions.
    SELF-RETRACTING DOOR RESTRAINT CLAIMS
  4. 4. A self-retracting door restraint as claimed in any preceding claim where a preset length of belt travel operates a sensing switch.
  5. 5. A self-retracting door restraint as claimed in any preceding claim where a switch is operated if the belt completely rewinds into the retracting assembly.
  6. 6. A self-retracting door restraint substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 6 of the accompanying drawings.
