Abstract

An inflatable tube 13 sits inside an outer cover of fabric or other material of the canopy 11 and locates when inflated in an undercut channel section 14. A water-tight releasable attachment to a supporting structure is thereby achieved. <IMAGE>

Description

INFLATABLE SEAL, PRIMARILY FOR A DEMOUNTABLE HOUSE EXTENSION This invention relates to an inflatable seal of particular use in the construction of a demountable house extension.
House extensions are well known and widespread in use both in the form of a brick base with glazed sections commonly known as a conservatory, and also single or double storey extensions consisting predominantly of brick to match the existing rendering of a dwelling.
House extensions of both types are expensive and are not able to be demounted when not in use. Use of a demountable structure as a house extension has been limited by the structure having no weathertight connection with the dwelling - a tent could be said to be a demountable structure but remains unstable due to no permanent connection or seal to the dwelling.
According to the present invention, however, there is provided an inflatable seal comprising a channel portion capable of being secured to a structure, and an inflatable portion capable of being secured to an extension for the structure, wherein the inflatable portion is held captive during use in the channel portion.
Preferably, the channel portion is in the form of an extrusion of substantially uniform cross-section along its length defining a cavity and an entrance of restricted width, and the inflatable portion is in the form of a tube which can be fed through the entrance into the cavity when deflated or partially deflated but cannot escape from the cavity through the entrance when more fully inflated.
The inflatable seal is preferably weatherproof i.e.
windtight and watertight.
Preferably, the inflatable seal can be inflated with a bicycle pump, enables the extension to be a canopy stretched evenly over a spaceframe, allows rapid fitment or removal of the canopy, and can additionally or alternatively be utilised in side curtaining for the canopy.
In another application, two of the inflatable seals are associated with a common extension such as, for example, an awning which is to cover a shared driveway between two adjacent houses, with one of the inflatable seals being secured to one of the houses and the other of the inflatable seals being secured to the other of the houses.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows in perspective the extension attached to the structure; Fig. 2 illustrates the "U" channel forming part of the inflatable seal; Fig. 3 is a section view of the inflatable seal in a deflated condition; and Fig. 4 is a section view of the inflatable seal in an inflated condition.
Referring to the drawings, a spaceframe 10 is covered with a suitable waterproof canopy 11 which is attached to the wall by an inflatable seal 12.
The canopy 11 is formed of, for example, canvas, acrylic cloth, cotton, PVC or other suitable watertight material, and during construction is fitted with an inflatable tube 13. The tube 13 is sown into and held captive by a part of the canopy that will, when air is pumped into the inflatable seal, fill a lipped channel 14 to hold the canopy captive. The channel 14 is secured to the wall of the building by suitable wall fixings such as bolts.
The tube 13 and the channel 14 together constitute the inflatable seal 12.
The user first partially inflates the tube 13 and pushes the inflated part of the canopy into the channel 14.
When in position, inflation of the tube 13 can be made until it is hard and fills the available space within the channel 14, at the same time effecting a good weather seal and allowing an even tension to be applied to the canopy 11 stretched over the spaceframe 10.

Claims (6)

1 An inflatable seal designed to provide a weatherproof seal between a demountable fabric house extension or canopy and a dwelling, comprising of a special housing channel to hold captive during use, the seal and the fabric or material surrounding the seal.
2 An inflatable seal as claimed in 1 wherein the seal enables the fabric or material to be stretched evenly over the spaceframe.
3 An inflatable seal as claimed in 1 and 2 wherein the inflation of the seal assists with the tensioning of the fabric over the structure.
4 An inflatable seal as claimed in 1 where the seal allows rapid fitment or removal of the canopy.
5 An inflatable seal as in 1 which allows the user to fit the canopy from the underside of the structure.
6 An inflatable seal substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawing.
