Abstract
227,135. Cox, F. B. July 6, 1923. Controllers with combinations of resistances. -In resistance controllers for starting electric motors or for other purposes unequal resistances are connected in parallel to the motor &c. circuit bv means of switches operating in cyclical order and arranged to give the maximum possible number of combinations. If n is the number of resistances, (2<n> - 1) combinations may, be obtained. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, five resistances R<1> - - R<5> are controlled by five pivoted switch-arms operated by cams C<1> - - C<5> on a manually turned shaft D, suitable disposition of the cams giving any number of resistance combinations up to 31. In modified apparatus, the switch-arms are operated electromagnetically or electropneumatically. In other modifications, one of which is shown in Fig. 8, the resistances are connected to suitably arranged groups of sliding contacts, which may be in disc or quadrant form and may be operated by solenoids or by changes of water level.
