Abstract
A apparatus and method for measuring deviation of a reference point from a datum utilises a theodolite telescope (31) equipped with an electronic image detector (35). Initially, the theodolite telescope is aligned with the datum. Signals from the detector are processed by an electronic circuit (39) to calculate the deviation. The datum may be a line such as an ideal flight path of an aircraft having a light which functions as a reference point. The datum may also be a point such as on a structure undergoing movement in strong winds. The profile of an object may also be determined by using two such theodolite telescopes equipped with detectors connected to an electronic circuit. <IMAGE>
