Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 to 3 there is illustrated a sash member according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 and a fixing assembly also according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 2 for fixing a panel, namely, a window pane 3 in an opening (not shown) formed in a framework (also not shown) in which the sash member 1 forms a part. In this embodiment of the invention the window pane 3 is a double glazed pane having a pair of glass panes 4 spaced apart by a spacer 6 which extends around a peripheral edge 7 of the window pane 3. The window pane 3 defines a front surface 9 and a rear surface 10.The sash member 1 is of extruded section aluminium material of substantially box section construction comprising a pair of side webs 14 and 15 joined by front and rear end webs 16 and 17, respectively, and is of sufficient strength to act as a load bearing strut in the framework. A rebated portion 19 for receiving the window pane 3 is formed on the side web 14 towards the front end webs 16. The rebated portion 19 is defined by a receiving face 20 on the side web 14 extending longitudinally along the sash member 1, and by an abutment face 21 against which the window pane 3 abuts. The abutment face 21 is formed by an outwardly extending abutment limb 22 which extends the length of the sash member 1.A retaining means, namely, a retaining groove 24 extends longitudinally along the abutment face 21 adjacent a distal edge 25 of the abutment limb 22 for receiving a sealing means, namely, a sealing strip 26 for sealably engaging the rear surface 10 of the window pane 3.
A retaining member 30 for retaining the window pane 3 in the rebated portion 19 is of extruded aluminium section of substantially L-shaped cross-section and extends substantially the length of the sash member 1.
The retaining member 30 is formed by a pair of legs, namely, a mounting leg 32 which lies adjacent and parallel to the receiving face 20, and an abutment leg 33 which defines an engagement face 34 for engaging the front surface 9 of the window pane 3 for retaining the window pane 3 in the rebated portion 19 between the abutment leg 33 and the abutment face 21.
Engagement means on the mounting leg 30 releasably engage the receiving face 20 with a snap fit action.
The engagement means comprises a pair of spaced apart engagement members, namely, engagement tongues 36 and 37 which respectively engage complimentary formations formed on the receiving face 20. The engagement tongue 36 engages one of the formations, namely, a forwardly extending engagement groove 38 which is formed by an engagement member 42 extending from and longitudinally the length of the abutment face 21.
The engagement tongue 37 engages a rearwardly facing recess 39 which is formed by a lip 40 extending from the receiving face 20 and defines with the receiving face 20 the recess 39 which is substantially dovetailed. The retaining member 30 is relieved at 41 to accommodate the lip 40. A retaining means formed by a retaining groove 43 retains an elongated sealing means, namely, a sealing strip 44 for sealably engaging the window pane 3. The sealing strips 26 and 44 are of a resilient plastics or rubber type material so that window pane 3 is tightly and sealably retained between the sealing strips 26 and 44, and in turn the abutment limb 22 and the abutment leg 33.
In use, when a framework is assembled from one or more of the sash members 1, the sealing strip 26 is engaged in the retaining groove 24. The panel is then offered up to the rebated portion 19. With the sealing strip 44 engaged in the retaining groove 43 the retaining member 30 is engaged with a snap fit action in the receiving face 20 so that the window pane 3 is retained between the abutment limb 22 and the abutment leg 33.
Referring now to Fig. 4 there is illustrated a sash member 50 according to another embodiment of the invention. The sash member 50 is substantially similar to the sash member 1 and similar components are identified by the same reference numerals. The main difference between the sash member 50 and the sash member 1 is that rebated portions 19 are provided on opposite side webs 14 and 15 of the sash member 50.
Accordingly, the sash member 50 may be used for engaging window panes 3 adjacent both side webs 14 and 15 in the rebated portions 19. Otherwise the sash member 50 is substantially identical to the sash member 1.
Referring now to Fig. 5 there is illustrated a sash member according to another embodiment of the invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 60 which is also substantially similar to the sash member 1 and similar components are identified by the same reference numerals. The main difference between the sash member 60 and the sash member 1 is that rebated portions 19 are provided on the side web 14 and the rear end web 17, respectively, for receiving window panes 3 adjacent the respective webs 14 and 17.
Referring now to Fig. 6 there is illustrated a sash member according to another embodiment of the invention, indicated generally by the reference numeral 70 which is substantially similar to the sash member 1 and similar components are identified by the same reference numerals. The main difference between the sash member 70 and the sash member 1 is that the rebated portion 19 is formed on the rear end web 17 instead of the side web 14 as in the case of the sash member 1.
Referring now to Figs. 7 and 8 there is illustrated a sash member also according to the invention indicated generally by the reference numeral 80. The sash member 80 is substantially similar to the sash member 1 and similar components are identified by the same reference numerals. The sash member 80 is suitable for use as the lower sash member of a framework where the sash member 80 rests on a window sill 81. Webs 82 and 83 extending the length of the sash member 80 define with the side web 14 and front end web 16 a drip cavity 84 for receiving condensation from the window pane 3. An elongated flange 86 extending the length of the sash member 80 from the side web 14 form with the abutment limb 22 a channel 87 for collecting condensation from the window pane 3. A plurality of spaced apart holes 88 drilled through the side webs 14 communicate the channel 87 with the cavity 84.A plurality of spaced apart holes 89 drilled through the front end web 16 drain condensation from the cavity 84 onto the window sill 81. An elongated flange 92 extends the length of the sash member 80 for locating the sash member 80 on the window sill 81. Otherwise, the sash member 80 is substantially similar to the sash member 1.
While a particular construction of sash members have been described other constructions of sash members may be provided. Needless to say, while the retaining members have been described as extending the length of the sash members, while this is preferable, it is not essential. Furthermore, while it is preferable it is not essential that the abutment limbs should extend the length of the sash member.
While particular engagement means have been described for releasably engaging the retaining members with the sash members with a snap fit action any other suitable engagement means may be provided, and indeed, in certain cases it is envisaged that the engagement means need not be a releasable engagement means.
Further it is envisaged that the engagement means need not engage the sash member with a snap fit action.
While the sash members and fixing assembly have been described for use in a framework, the sash members may be put to many other uses. Further, while the sash members and fixing assembly have been described for mounting a window pane, the sash members and fixing assembly may be used for mounting any other panel.
Furthermore, the sash members and fixing assembly may be used for mounting a single glazed window pane instead of a double glazed window pane.
