Abstract

A drain comprises a grating (1), an outlet below the grating and a cap (8) arranged to lit over the outlet to form a water seal, wherein the grating is associated with the cap so that the grating can only be replaced over the drain when the cap is in position. This ensures that the drain cannot be used unless the cap is fitted, and therefore ensures that the drain is always isolated from the sewer when in use. <IMAGE>

Description

DRAIN The present application relates to a drain of the sort comprising a grating which is typically mounted flush with the floor, and an outlet below the grating. A cap fits over the outlet and in combination with the outlet forms a water seal.
According to the present invention, in such a drain the grating is associated with the cap in such a way that the grating can only be replaced over the drain when the cap is in position.
In drains of the type described, it is important that it should be possible to remove the cap in order to have access to the outlet in case, for example, the outlet is blocked. However, with conventional drains of this type, it is possible for the drain to be used with the cap removed, so that there is no effective water seal to isolate the drain from the sewer. The present invention overcomes this problem by associating the grating with the cap so that the grating cannot be replaced unless the cap is in place, effectively preventing the use of the drain without the cap. The cap may be captive to a frame which provides the support for the grating, or alternatively, the cap is captive to the grating itself.
Preferably the drain includes means for adjusting the spacing of the cap and the grating. This may have the form of means for adjusting the height of the frame with respect to a surface above which, in use the frame and grating are mounted.
The fixing between the cap and the frame or the grating preferably includes one or more adjusting rods having a threaded portion, an adjusting nut threadedly engaging the threaded portion of the rod and being moved to a desired position along the rod to fix the desired spacing between the cap and the frame or the grating. Preferably the rods are fixed to the frame at one end and are peened at the other end to prevent removal of the adjusting nut.
The drain may include a perforated silt bucket, in which case preferably the cap extends downwardly from the bottom of the bucket and the bucket is fixed to the frame or grating by the adjusting rods.
Preferably the frame and silt bucket are contained within an inner gully body which extends downwardly from the frame and surrounds at least part of the silt bucket, and at least a lowermost portion of the inner gully body is received within an outer gully body, the outlet being fixed in the base of the outer gully body.
Preferably the means for adjusting the height of the frame comprise a plurality of adjusting bolts extending between the inner and outer gully bodies and arranged to allow adjustment of the height of the inner gully body with respect to the outer gully body.
Examples of a drain in accordance with the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view; Figure 2 is a partially sectioned side elevation; Figure 3 shows a second example; Figure 4 shows a third example; and, Figure 5 shows a cap as used in the drain.
A floor drain comprises a grating 1 which makes a close fit with and is supported by a frame 2 which has a diameter slightly larger than that of the grating. The grating 1 and frame 2 are both shown as being either square or round, but a round grating and a square frame, or a square grating and a round frame or other shapes of grating and frame may be used. In this example a thin, lightweight grating of 7mm thickness is used. A silt bucket 3 extends below the grating 1. The frame, the grating and the silt bucket are all contained within a inner gully body 4. This body 4 includes a stepped surface 5 towards its upper end and in use the frame rests on this stepped surface. The lower end of the inner gully body 4 fits within an outer gully body 6. An outlet 7 extends centrally through the bottom wall of the outer gully body 6.
A cap 8 formed integrally with the bottom of the silt bucket 3 extends downwards over the outlet 7. As seen in the Figure, the cap is spaced from the outlet so as to form with the outlet and with the lower portion of the outer gully body 6 a water seal isolating foul air in the sewer to which the outlet is connected from the room in which the drain is positioned.
The top of the silt bucket is held captive to the frame 2 by adjusting rods 9,10 which pass through an annular flange on the top of the bucket. The position of the silt bucket and hence of the cap is adjusted relative to the frame 2 by means of adjusting nuts which threadedly engage the adjusting rods 9,10. The bottoms of the adjusting rods are peened to prevent nut removal.
It will be seen, that since the cap together with the silt bucket are captive to the frame the drain cannot be used with the cap removed, since then there would be no frame to support the grating. The grating is dimensioned so that in the absence of the frame it would fall into the inner gully body.
The cap 8 rests on legs 11 which are spaced to form drainage passages 18 which allow discharge of water into the outlet. An annular ring 17 is welded to the bottom of the legs. When the cap 8 is removed from the drain, sediment settled at the bottom of the bucket is removed by the annular ring.
The outer gully body has a flange and clamping device 12 which is fixed to the waterproof membrane forming the dampcourse. Three adjusting bolts through hank bush fixings are provided between the inner and outer bodies and may be loosened to allow sliding movement upwards or downwards of the inner body with respect to the outer body so that the height of the top of the inner body can be adjusted so that it lies flush with the finished floor level.
The silt bucket may be formed in two co-axial parts 15, 16 as shown in Figure 4. This allows the bucket to telescope to the required depth. In this case, the upper part 15 is welded to the frame 2, and the lower part 16 is held at the required position by the adjusting rods 9,10.
Although described above in relation to an example including a silt bucket and adjustable height, drains in accordance with the present invention may equally be formed with fixed height and without a silt bucket.
Figure 3 shows an example of a drain without a silt bucket. In this example, the cap 8 is attached directly to the adjusting rods 9,10, which pass through the lugs 13,14 on the top of the cap.
In an alternative example, the adjusting rods 9,10 are connected directly to the grating 1. In this case, the frame 2 may be permanently secured to the floor since the grating 1 cannot be removed from the drain unless the cap 8 which is captive to the grating 1 is also removed, and similarly the grating 1 cannot be replaced unless the cap 8 is also replaced.
In all examples of the present invention, all elements are made from stainless steel.
