Abstract
A decalcomanium or transfer comprises a transfer laminate having a metallic layer (e.g. a stamping or blocking foil) wherein at least some of the originally metallised area has been selectively demetallised, such that the remaining metal forms the metallic part of the design. The demetallised areas may be coloured by the post application of colouring material (e.g. ink) after the selective demetallisation step. As described, a foil comprises a base layer on which is deposited (in order) a release layer, a clear (or coloured) laquer, a metallic layer, and an adhesive layer, and is prepared by the printed application of a patterned resist followed by etching and subsequent printing of the applied colour. An adhesive layer may be applied to the surface of the applied colour. Also mentioned as methods of selectively demetallising the foil are dissolution in solvent, adhesive stripping and hot-melt. <IMAGE>
Description
A TRANSFER/DECAL COMBINING COLOURS & METALLIC STAMPING FOIL
This invention relates to a Transfer/Decal combining colours and the metallic print effect produced by Gold Blocking so as to apply the complete design in one pressing.
Metallic stamping foil (Gold blocking foil) is in common use to give glistening metallic effects on book covers and the like in all cases the foil is applied as an additional process.
According to the present invention the colours are applied to the metallic stamping foil after the unwanted area of the metallic coating has been etched or otherwise removed according to the requirements of the design. The result is a Transfer/Decal that can be applied to the surface material in a single pressing.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 Shows a cross section of metallic stamping foil of
the kind used in this example.
FIGURE 2 Shows the applied etch resistant print forming an
additional film on parts of the back of the foil.
FIGURE 3 Shows the result of etching with a solution of
Caustic Soda.
FIGURE 4 Shows the infill caused by printing the colours
over the etched design on the back of the metallic
stamping foil.
Refering to the drawing. The Transfer/Decal is produced on metallic stamping foil this being made up of layers as shown in Figure 1, No.1 is a clear film. No.2 a release coating.
No.3 clear or coloured lacquer. No.4 aluminium, or other metal according to the particular manufacturer. No.5 adhesive coat usually heat activated.
In order to produce a Transfer/Decal on the metallic stamping foil, an etch resist must be printed on the parts of the foil required to be metallic on the finished
Transfer/Decal, this is an ink or coating unaffected by the etch solution, Caustic Soda in this example as shown in
Figure 2. The metallic stamping foil is now subjected to the action of the Caustic Soda solution by way of which the unwanted areas of metallic deposit are etched away as Figure 3. The metallic deposit can also be removed by stripping with adhesive or similar means (not shown). The other components of the design, such as colours are now applied, the etch resist and the colours being compatable to form a bond. Any special adhesive would now be applied as a final coat. The resulting Transfer/Decalcan now be applied by one single pressing without the use of a die.
Claims (4)
1. A Transfer/Decal combining colours and the finish of metallic stamping foil.Created by removing the coatings on the stamping foil in certain areas, and either replacing it with coloured inks or leaving blank as the finished design requires
2. A Transfer/Decal combining colours and metallic stamping foil as claimed in Claim 1. Wherein the metallic stamping will have been manufactured with a design pre-printed upon it, thereby adding this effect to the finished Transfer/Decal
3. A Transfer/Decal combining colours and metallic stamping foil as claimed in Claim 1. and Claim 2. Wherein an extra coat of specialised adhesive is applied as a final coat, for example a pressure sensitive adhesive. The Transfer/Decal is then of a kind to rub down on to the surface to be decorated
4. A Transfer/Decal combining colours and metallic stamping foil as claimed in Claim 1. Claim 2. and Claim 3. Wherein the coatings on the metallic stamping foil are removed by other means than etching, for example by hot die, tacky adhesive or a solvent action
