Abstract

A foot and leg exerciser comprises an elliptically shaped footplate 1 and a baseplate 2 separated by a compressible ball 3. The ball 3 is free to roll within the confines of concave seats 4, 5 provided respectively on the footplate 1 and baseplate 2. Movement of the footplate 1 relative to the baseplate 2 is resisted by elastic cord 6 or springs extending between the outer edges of the footplate 1 and baseplate 2. The tension in the elastic cord 6 can be varied. Straps 7 can be provided to secure the user's ankle to the footplate 1. The apparatus allows the footplate 1 to be moved in any direction relative to baseplate 2. <IMAGE>

Description

FOOT AND LEG EXERCISER This invention relates to a foot and leg exerciser.
There are several devices in current use for strengthening and mobilising legs and ankles, one being the well-known wobble board However, exercise devices of this type are limited in their movement and fall to reflect the true movement capabilities of, say, rolling your ankle or leg stretching and contracting movements. These movements are not performed against a resistance.
The present invention provides a foot and leg exerciser which comprises a footplate support directly above a baseboard. Between the footplate and baseboard a ball is placed which can on movement of the footplate, rotate and roll within the confines of two concave dishes, one having its base attached to the underside of the footplate; the second directly below, having its base attached to the topside of the baseboard. This allows the footplate to move over the baseboard and to rotate around the ball in all directions. Attaching the baseboard and footplate is an elastically extendible cord peripherally placed around the dishes.
Movements of the footplate are therefore performed against a resistance. The combination of the elastically extendible cord, ball and dishes, allows the exercise device to self centralise and return to its original position when force is withdrawn.
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig.l. Shows in perspective the foot and leg exerciser in its original static position.
Fig.2. Illustrates side view of device in original static position.
Fig.3. Shows footplate movement forwards with rotation of its front edge downwards.
Fig.4. Shows footplate movement forwards with rotation of its back and edge downwards.
Fig.5. Shows footplate twisting action about an axis travelling through the centre of dishes and ball means.
Fig.6. Shows downward movement of footplate compressing the balL Fig.7. Shows raising movement of footplate against cord resistance, with the base fixed and foot straps.
Referring to the drawing, the foot and leg exercise device comprises a footplate 1, support means and a baseboard 2. Between the footplate 1, and baseboard 2, is placed a ball 3. contained but on movement of the footplate is able to roll and rotate around within the confines of two concave dishes 4 & 5. The base of dish 4. being attached to the underside of footplate 1. and the base of dish 5. being attached to the topside of the baseboard 2. as shown in figures 1 & 2.
The baseboard 2 and footplate 1 are connected to each other, peripherally around the dishes by elastically extendible cord 6.
In order to move the footplate 1. place one or both feet on the footplate support means. By pushing the footplate 1. forward as shown in fig. 3. it causes the ball 3. to roll forward in dish 5. and dish 4. to move over it. Movement is progressively stopped by the sloped edges of dish 5. and dish 4.
Pressing the ball of the foot downwards as well as pushing forward causes the footplate 1. to rotate forward around the ball 3. as shown in fig. 3. Pressing the heel of your foot down on the footplate as shown in fig. 4. as well as pressing forward causes the footplate to rotate backwards around the ball 3 as well as to move forward.
Twisting movements of the foot can be performed with the footplate 1. moving about an axis that passes through the centre of the ball 3. and dish means 5 & 4, as shown in fig. 5.
Downward pressure on the footplate 1. compresses the ball providing progressive resistance without impact damage as shown by means of directional arrows in fig. 5. In reality the movements are often a combination of all the specific movements depicted in drawings 1-6. Raising the foot as shown in fig. 7.
with the baseboard 2. fixed to a secure platform 8 and with attached foot straps 7. holding the foot to footplate 1. acts against the progressive resistance of the peripheral placed elastically extendible cord 6 connecting the footplate and baseboard 2.
Referring to all drawings, except fig. 6. the elastically extendible cord 6. peripherally placed and connecting the footplate 1. and baseboard 2. allows all movements to be performed against a progressive resistance. This, in combination with the self centralising dishes 4 & 5. and ball means 3 allows the footplate to automatically return to its original position over the baseboard once the force is removes

Claims (10)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A foot and leg exerciser comprising footplate support means directly above a baseboard, between which is placed a ball which on movement of the footplate is able to roll and rotate within the confines of two concave dishes, one having its base attached to the underside of the footplate, the second directly positioned below the above one and having its base attached to the topside of the baseboard. The footplate and its dish is therefore able to move over the baseboard and rotate about the ball in all directions.
Attached to the footplate and baseboard is an elastic or rubber extendible cord peripherally placed around the dishes. All movements are therefore performed against a resistance. The combination of the ball, concave dishes and attached cord or rubber means allows the footplate, ball and dishes to self centralise and return to their original position when force is withdrawn.
  2. 2. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1. wherein a ball is provided to roll and rotate within the dish means confines and their sloping sides progressively stopping rolling movements.
  3. 3. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1. wherein elastically extendible cord is provided to attached footplate and baseboard. All movements of the footplate are therefore performed against a resistance.
  4. 4. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1.2.3. wherein an attached cord is provided to assist in combination with the ball and dish means with making the footplate and its dish return to its original position when force is withdrawn.
  5. 5. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1. & 2. wherein both dishes means are provided and placed slightly to the rear between the heel and sole of a foot placed above, allowing full rotation of foot and ankle.
  6. 6. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1.3.4. wherein a cord is provided which can be adjustably tensioned to provide different tensions.
  7. 7. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1. wherein a fixing for the baseplate is provided, allowing the footplate to be raised against a resistance.
  8. 8. A foot and leg exercise as claimed in claim 1. wherein a pressure filled ball is provided which can act as resistance when downward pressure is applied.
  9. 9. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 1. wherein an elliptically shaped footplate is provided, allowing maximum movement of ankle and foot.
  10. 10. A foot and leg exerciser as claimed in claim 7. wherein straps are provided to hold foot to footplate to allow raising and more control of movement.
