Description
Title: Improvements relating to bird feeders
Description of Invention
This invention is concerned with improvements relating to bird feeders.
Bird feeders conventionally comprise bird tables, upon which bird feed is laid, and wire mesh containers which may be hung from an appropriate point, to provide birds with foodstuffs such as nuts, particularly in the Winter-time.
Conventional bird feeders are pretty boring, and it is one of the various objects of this invention to provide a bird feeder which is pleasing in appearance, and which may blend in with its natural surroundings.
According to this invention there is provided a bird feeder comprising a body portion in the form of a living thing, and a feed holder carried by the body portion.
The body portion may be three-dimensional, but is conveniently in two dimensions, being cut or stamped from a flat piece of wood or plastics, or being moulded in the flat from plastics.
The body portion may be in the form of a flower, or a bird, or an animal.
Preferably the bird feeder comprises support means enabling the body portion to be supported in a desired position, which may be in the form of a stem, such as a pole which may be stuck in the ground, or a hook by which the body portion may be secured to a tree or wall. Where the body portion is in the form of a flower, conveniently the support means is afforded by a stem for the flower.
The feed holder may be in the form of a separable container, which may be secured in a cavity or aperture of the body portion, conveniently releasably so secured to the body, allowing the holder to be removed for re-filling.
Alternatively the food holder may be fixedly secured to the body, means being provided to enable foodstuff to be inserted into the food holder.
If desired the food holder may be provided by wire mesh, which may be stapled into a recess or cavity provided in the body portion, a plug being provided which may be opened to permit foodstuff to be inserted into the cavity.
There will now be given a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of a bird feeder which is a preferred embodiment of this invention, having been selected for the purposes of illustrating the invention by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figures 1 and 2 are views of the preferred embodiment, the remaining views showing examples of other forms which may be utilised.
The bird feeder which is the preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a body portion 6 in the form of a rabbit, being cut or stamped from flat timber such as ply-wood. Provided in the body portion 6 is an aperture 8, wire mesh 10 being located over the aperture 8, being secured in position by the use of staples.
On the opposite side, the aperture 8 may be closed by a cover 11, a plug 12 being provided, enabling feedstuff such as nuts to be inserted into the aperture 8, for replenishment.
Access to the feed holder may be from one side only, conveniently the side which in use will be presented towards viewers of feeding birds (e.g. towards the house).
Alternatively the feed holder, comprising a box -like structure having wire mesh on one side, may be located in the aperture.
The bird feeder comprises support means in the form of a pole 18, such as may be stuck into the ground at a suitable position, or alternatively may be provided with hook means, by which the body portion may be fixed to a wall or hung from a tree.
The remaining drawings show other forms which the bird feeder may take, including cat, owl, duck, hedgehog, hen, squirrel, or flower.
Conveniently for a range of designs, the apertures 8 and the cages to fit in the apertures are of identical size and shape, so as to be interchangeable.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
