Abstract

A mounting member 12 is mounted on a rear window 20 on a vehicle by adhesion of the adhesive pad 17 to the window 20. Alternatively the mounting member can be mounted by suction on a portion of the bodywork of the vehicle, or mounted between window and window frame (Figure 4). The removable end-stop 14 is removed and the mast 11 is threaded through a sleeve of a pennant 21. The removable end-stop 14 is then replaced and the adjustable abutment collar 15 is moved along the length of the mast 11 until both it and the removable end-stop each abut an edge of the pennant 21. The pennant 21 is then securely attached to the vehicle and may therefore display a required message, advertisement or logo. To compensate for vehicles with differently angled sides, the angle at which the mast 11 makes with the mounting member 12 (and therefore with the vehicle window 20) is adjustable.

Description

DISPLAY DEVICE The present invention relates to a display device and is concerned particularly, although not exclusively, with a display device for use on a vehicle.
It is often required to display a flag or emblem from a vehicle, such as a motor vehicle. For example, when a representative of a country visits another country he may display a representation of his country's flag on the vehicle. Usually this is done by securing a small pole or mast to the body of the vehicle by drilling a hole therein. Adaptation of a vehicle for this kind of apparatus is time consuming and results in permanent damage to the vehicle. Because of this only a few vehicles are adapted in this way.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided display apparatus for displaying a display article such as a flag, pennant or the like, the apparatus comprising a display member arranged, in use, to support a display article, and mounting means arranged, in use, to mount the display member on a mounting surface, the display member being angularly adjustable relative to the mounting means.
The mounting means may comprise an adhesive portion arranged, in use, to adhere to a mounting surface.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided vehicle display apparatus for displaying a display article such as a flag, pennant or the like, the apparatus comprising a display member arranged, in use to support a display article, and mounting means arranged, in use, to mount the display member on a vehicle surface.
The mounting means may comprise an adhesive portion arranged, in use, to adhere to a vehicle surface.
Alternatively or additionally the mounting means may comprise suction means.
The mounting means may be arranged in use to be retained between a portion of a window of a vehicle and a portion of a window frame of a vehicle.
The display member may be angularly adjustable relative to the mounting means.
The display member may comprise an elongate member, and preferably comprises a mast.
The display member may be arranged to pass through a hem or pocket in a display article such as in a flag, pennant or the like.
In a preferred arrangement the display member comprises an end-stop member which may be arranged, in use to retain a display article on the display member.
Preferably the end-stop member is displaceable from the display member.
The display member may comprise an abutment member located on the display member and arranged to abut a portion of a display article in use. Preferably the abutment member is adjustable relative to the display member.
In a preferred arrangement a display article is arranged to be retained on the display member between the end-stop member and the abutment member.
Preferably the display member is displaceable from the mounting member. In a preferred arrangement the display member is arranged, in use, to threadably engage the mounting means.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a display arrangement comprising a display article, a display member arranged, in use, the support the display article and mounting means arranged, in use, to mount the display member on a mounting surface, the display member being angularly adjustable relative to the mounting means.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle display arrangement comprising a display article, a display member arranged, in use, to support the display article, and mounting means arranged, in use, to mount the display member on a vehicle surface.
The display article may comprise a flag, pennant or the like.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of displaying a display article such as a flag, pennant or the like on a vehicle, the method comprising mounting a display member on a vehicle surface, without modifying the vehicle surface. The method may comprise causing a mounting means to adhere to a surface of a vehicle.
The invention also includes display apparatus and a display arrangement substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The invention also includes any combination of the features or limitations referred to herein.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a display device according to an embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a front view of a device of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows the display device of Figures 1 and 2 attached to a vehicle; and Figure 4 shows an alternative means of attaching the display device to a vehicle.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a display device shown generally at 10 comprises a mast 11 and a mounting member 12.
The mast 11 comprises a steel rod with a hollow internal threaded portion 13 located at one end 11. At the other end lib is a removable end stop 14. An adjustable abutment collar 15 is located part way along the length of the mast. The mounting member 12 comprises a mounting plate 16, having an adhesive pad 17 (shown in figure 1) on one side thereof. A threaded peg 18 is arranged to move pivotally with respect to the plate 16 by rotation of a screw 19 to which the peg 18 is attached.
The screw 19 can be made to turn by insertion and turning of a screwdriver (not shown) in the screw 19.
Referring now to Figure 3, in use, the mounting member 12 is mounted on a rear window 20 on a vehicle by adhesion of the adhesive pad 17 to the window 20.
Alternatively the mounting member can be mounted on a portion of the bodywork of the vehicle. The removable end stop 14 is removed and the mast 11 is threaded through a sleeve of a pennant 21. The removable end stop 14 is then replaced and the adjustable abutment collar 15 is moved along the length of the mast 11 until both it and the removable end stop each abut an edge of the pennant 21.
The mast 11 is then made to threadably engage the peg 18 (shown in Figures 1 and 2).
The pennant 21 is then securely attached to the vehicle and may therefore display a required message, advertisement or logo. To compensate for vehicles with differently angled sides, the angle which the mast 11 makes with the mounting member 12 (and therefore with the vehicle window 20) is adjustable.
When it is no longer required to mount the apparatus on the vehicle the mast 11 is simple threadably disengaged from the mounting member 12 and the mounting member 12 is then itself prised from the window 20 leaving no permanent damage to the vehicle. Should the pennant become caught for any reason while the vehicle is travelling, the mounting member 12 will become prised from the window 21 before any permanent damage is done to the vehicle.
Figure 4 shows as an alternative arrangement for attaching the display device to a vehicle. The mast 11 is connected to the mounting member 12 in the usual way but the mounting member 12 is riveted to an inverted u-shaped bracket 22 which itself is a friction fit over the top of the vehicle window 20. When the window 20 is wound to its uppermost extent, the bracket 22 becomes trapped between the window 20 and the window frame 23.
