Abstract
A cover (10), for example for reducing evaporation of a liquid, comprises a sheet (11) of flexible material which is provided with a plurality of sleeves and a plurality of flexible rods (13) each for location in a corresponding one of the sleeves. The arrangement is such that the rods (13), when located in the sleeves, are formed into a curved configuration and ends of the rods (13) are secured at a selected location (15) so that the sheet (11) provides a geodesic formation at the location (15). The cover may be mounted on an annular buoy (14), or reinforced eyelets (16, Fig. 1, not shown) may be provided in the sheet for tethering the cover. <IMAGE>
Description
A Multi-purpose Cover
This invention relates to a multi-purpose cover particularly, but not exclusively, for location over liquid to control evaporation of the liquid.
It is known to provide covers adapted for location over liquid to reduce evaporation of the liquid. Such covers are used for open air swimming pools, for example. However, such covers generally are provided for specific locations and are tailored for application at those locations.
It is desirable, therefore, to provide a multi-purpose cover which is adapted for use at different locations and which may easily be moved from one location to another.
According to the present invention, there is provided a multipurpose cover comprising a sheet of flexible material, a plurality of flexible rods and locating means for locating the rods relative to a surface of the sheet, the arrangement being such that, when the rods are flexed in an arcuate configuration, the sheet is erected into a geodesic formation.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet of one embodiment of a cover in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a rod of the embodiment,
Figure 3 is a plan view of a buoy of the embodiment and,
Figure 4 is an elevation of the embodiment when in use.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a cover 10 comprising a circular sheet 11 of flexible material a surface of which is provided with a plurality of sleeves 12. The sleeves 12 each are provided for receiving a corresponding one of a plurality of flexible rods 13. The cover 10 also comprises an annular buoy 14 having a plurality of pockets 15 spaced one from another circumferentially of the buoy 14, each of the pockets 15 being adapted to receive an end portion of a corresponding one of the rods 13.
The cover 10 is constructed by inserting the rods 13 each through a corresponding one of the sleeves 12 and locating the sheet 11 above the buoy 14. The rods 13 then are flexed so that each is of arcuate configuration and each end portion of the rods 13 is inserted in a corresponding one of the pockets 15. The sheet 11 thus is erected into a dome or geodesic configuration upstanding from the buoy 14, as shown in Figure 4. The cover 10 then is located on a water surface and floats thereon. If necessary, the cover 10 is anchored or tethered so as to cover a desired portion of the surface of the water.
It will be appreciated that the presence of the sheet 11 extending over the buoy 14 will have the effect of reducing evaporation of water bounded by the buoy 14.
It will also be appreciated that the cover 10 may be located on land and, for this purpose, reinforced eyelets 16 may be provided circumferentially of the sheet 11 whereby guy ropes may be inserted through selected eyelets 16 so as to tether the cover relative to adjacent ground.
Furthermore, it will be appreciated that a cover in accordance with the present invention may be used to protect water from algae growth and, on land, for crop protection and for enhancing the earth's natural resources.
Claims (5)
1. A multi-purpose cover comprising a sheet of flexible
material, a plurality of flexible rods and locating means

the arrangement being such that, when the rods are flexed
in an arcuate configuration, the sheet is erected into a
geodesic formation.
2. A cover as claimed in Claim 1 wherein there is provided a
buoy having means for retaining end portions of the rods
when the sheet is erected.
3. A cover as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the buoy is of
annular configuration.
4. A cover as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the retaining means
comprises a plurality of retaining devices spaced one
from another circumferentially of the buoy.
5. A multi-purpose cover substantially as hereinbefore
described and as illustrated in the accompanying
drawings.
