Description
2269202 Joining device for seals The present invention relates to a
joining device for seals of the type comprising a U-shaped element for fixing on a frame and a tubular sealing element.
Heretofore known devices are provided with fastening means (pine teeth.... ) ensuring that the device is securely held in the respective fastening elements of the seal ends to be connected.
Such devices, however, have complex shapes, which makes them expensive, and their mounting is not always efficient.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome the aforesaid technical problems satisfactorily.
This object is reached with a joining device for seals of the type comprising a U-shaped element for fixing on a frame and a tubular sealing element, which device is characterized in that it comprises at least an insert constituted of a tab of curved cross-section designed to be placed longitudinally on the bottom of the fastening element in such a way as to be held in abutment between the two branches of the U, and to straddle the two contiguous seal ends.
According to one advantageous characteristic, the longitudinal ends of the tab are bevelled with rounded edges.
According to another characteristic, said tab is produced in a polyacetal copolymer.
The device according to the invention is particularly simple, light, easy to produce, therefore inexpensive. It makes it possible to join two seals together, very efficiently and aesthetically, in order to form forming open or closed loops or else a longitudinal strip. Furthermore, it is perfectly neutral towards paints and the metallic environment.

The tab 1, as shown in Figures la, 1b and lc is oblong-shaped with a curved cross-section.
The tab 1 comprises a positional reference constituted for example by a central recess 10. The longitudinal ends la of said tab are bevelled, with rounded edges, in spatula-fashion, while the lateral edges 1b are rectilinear and parallel together.
Figure 2 shows a seal J equipped with a joining insert which is in the form of the tab 1 shown in the aforesaid figures.
The seal J comprises a U-shaped element 2 for fixing on a frame, for example on a vehicle frame, and a tubular sealing element 3.
The tab 1 is placed longitudinally at the bottom 2c of the U-shaped element 2; the lateral edges 1b being heldin abutment between the branches 2a, 2b of said element 2 against their inner face.
The thickness, the width, and the curve of the tab 1 are predetermined as a function of the form and of the material constituting the U-shaped element forming the fastening clamp of the seal J.
Figures 3a and 3b are cross-sectional views of the joint between two seals J at the level of their respective U-shaped elements 2, 22.
3 The tab 1 is placed astride on the respective bottoms 2c, 22c of the two elements 2, 22 so that said latter are jointed and held in abutment between the branches 2a, 2b and 22a, 22c.
The reference 10 is intended for adjusting the position of the tab 1 with respect to each one of the two seals.
The mounting of the tab is optionally consolidated by the addition of spots of adhesive 11 between the bottom 2c and the convex face of said tab.
The alignment of elements 2, 22 causes the joining of the respective sealing elements 3, 33 of the two seals J.
The tab may be produced by any known method (molding, extruding....) from a material affording a good compromise between rigidity and elasticity such as a polyacetal copolymer.
It is then possible to obtain a certain amount of elasticity both longitudinally, in order to join looped seals, and transversely, in order to simultaneously ensure adequate abutment of the lateral ends lb of the tab between the branches of elements 2, 22.
Claims (5)
1. Joining device for seals of the type comprising a U-shaped element for fixing on a frame and a tubular sealing element, wherein said device comprises at least one insert constituted of a tab of curved cross-section designed to be placed longitudinally at the bottom of the fixing element so as to be held in abutment between the two branches of the U, and to straddle the two contiguous seal ends, the thickness, the width and the curve of which tab are predetermined as a function of the form of the Ushaped fastening element and of its constituent material.
2. Device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said tab comprises a positional reference constituted by a central recess.
3. Device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said tab is adhesively fixed by its convex face on the bottom of the U-shaped fastening element.
4. Device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the longitudinal ends of the tab are bevelled with rounded edges.
5. Device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said tab is produced in a polyacetal copolymer.
