Abstract

A needle bed of a flat knitting machine has at its upper side a guide rail (11) with a downwardly open groove (11') and at its lower side a guide rod (12). A carriage (20) has a slide bar (21) at its upper side which slidably engages the groove (11') and a groove (22) at the lower side of the carriage engages over the guide rod (12). A plurality of rotatable rollers (23, 24) are respectively mounted on the groove bottom and the flanks of the groove (22) to engage the rod (12). <IMAGE>

Description

KNITTING MACHINE This invention relates to a knitting machine, more particularly to an improved knitting machine having a support body and a carriage which slides smoothly on the support body.
Referring to Figure 1, a conventional knitting machine (N1) includes a support body (A) which has two inclined bearing faces (Al, A2) and two slide rails (C, D) mounted on the bearing faces (Al, A2) that are respectively formed with two slide grooves (All, A21), and a carriage (B) which has two diverging side portions (B1, B2) respectively formed with two lower slide bars (by', B2') that slidably engage the slide grooves (All, A21) so that the carriage (B) is movable with respect to the support body (A).Since wearing of the slide bars (B1', B2') and the slide grooves (All, A21) is easily produced due to friction between the slide bars (B1', B2') and the slide grooves (All, A21), the carriage (B) cannot smoothly slide on the support body (A) and easily shakes, thereby increasing the production of defective knitted fabrics.
Therefore, the objective of this invention is to provide an improved knitting machine which has a support body and a carriage that is stably mounted on the support body and that smoothly slides with respect to the support body in order to produce high quality knitted fabrics and the like.
Accordingly, a knitting machine of the present invention includes a support body having a top bearing end with a first side and a second side opposite to the first side, a longitudinal guide rail mounted on the support body at the first side, and a longitudinal guide rod mounted on the support body at the second side. The guide rail has a substantially U-shaped cross-section and defines a first slide groove which opens in a direction toward the guide rod. A carriage is slidably mounted on the top bearing end of the support body and has two opposite longitudinal sides.
A longitudinal slide bar extends from one of the opposite longitudinal sides and slidably engages the first slide groove. A longitudinal second slide groove is formed on the other one of the opposite longitudinal sides. The second slide groove is defined by a groove bottom portion and two opposite flank portions. The carriage further has a plurality of rotatable rollers respectively mounted on the flank portions and the groove bottom portion along the second slide groove.
The second slide groove receives the guide rod and the rollers rollingly contact the guide rod.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a conventional knitting machine.
Figure 2 is an exploded view of a knitting machine of the present invention.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of a carriage of the knitting machine shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a schematic view of the knitting machine shown in Figure 2.
Referring to Figures 2 to 4, a knitting machine (N2) of the present invention includes a support body (10) having a top inclined bearing face which has an upper first side (10a) and a lower second side (10b).
A longitudinal guide rail (11) is mounted on the support body (10) at the first side (10a). A longitudinal guide rod (12) is mounted on the support body (10) at the second side (lOb) and has a circular cross-section. The guide rail (11) has a substantially U-shaped cross-section and defines a first slide groove (11') which opens in a direction toward the guide rod (12).
A carriage (20) is slidably mounted on the top bearing face of the support body (10). The carriage (20) has a longitudinal first side (20a) and a longitudinal'second side (20b) opposite to the first side (20a). A longitudinal slide bar (21) extends from the first side (20a) and slidably engages the first slide groove (11'). An L-shaped plate member (220) is attached to the first side (20a). A roller (22') is mounted on the L-shaped plate member (220) and rollingly contacts the guide rail (11) when the slide bar (21) slides along the first slide groove (11'). A longitudinal second slide groove (22) is formed on the second side (20b) and is defined by a groove bottom portion (22a) and two opposite flank portions (22b).
Two first rollers (23) are mounted on the groove bottom portion (22a) along the slide groove (22). Two pairs of second rollers (24) are mounted on the flank portions (22b) along the slide groove (22). The second slide groove (22) receives the guide rod (12), and the first and second rollers (23, 24) rollingly contact the guide rod (12).
Referring once more to Figure 4, the slide bar (21) slidably engages the first slide groove (11'), and the first and second rollers (23, 24) rollingly contact the guide rod (12) when the carriage (20) is hand-operated so as to move with respect to the support body (10) in order to produce knitted fabrics. The guide rod (12) supports the carriage (20), and the guide rail (11) retains the carriage (20), therefore the carriage is stably mounted on the support body (10). Since rolling contact is provided by the rollers (22', 23, 24), the friction between the carriage (20) and the guide rail (11) and the guide rod (12) is little and wearing of the carriage (20) is minimized. Therefore, shaking of the carriage (20) is prevented, and the carriage (20) can smoothly slide with respect to the support body (10) along the guide rail (11) and the guide rod (12) so as to produce high quality knitted fabrics.
