Abstract

A single arc or semi-circular ferrite magnet (1) is placed within the kettle or water boiler, steel keeper plate (3) is placed on the outside of the vessel to create a strong magnetic field between magnet (1) and steel keeper plate (3). Plastic coating (4) can prevent corrosion and also be decorative. The boiling water is conditioned as it naturally circulates and passes through the magnetic field, thereby inhibiting adhesion. <IMAGE>

Description

DES#RIPTION W#IER CONDITIONIN# DEVICE This invention relates to devices for conditioning water and in particular to devices for inhibiting or reducing the scale on surfaces within domestic and catering appliances. The formation of scale on surfaces is a problem in homes and work places. It will occur on the surfaces in contact with watery in kettles washing machines. water heatersdliquid vending machines and other appliances. The scale may be caused by "hard" watery that is to says water containing salts of calcium and magnesium etc. which precipitate as calcium and magnesium carbonate at heat transfer surfaces. The present invention provides a device which can be installed within kettles and small pot boilers to provide suitable protection.
In accordance with the present invention an apparatus is provided for inhibiting the formation of scale on surfaces contacted by water. It consists of an arc segment permanent ferrite magnet, magnetised radially, or magnets giving similar magnetic fields and properties. It also uses a steel keeper plate that is suitably coated with plastic or a material having similar properties to prevent corrosion. The steel keeper plate can be electro plated to prevent corrosion. The steel keeper plate should be of a thickness that allows it to be formed to take up the contour of the appliance to which it is to be fitted e.g. the shape of a typical domestic kettle.
The magnet is placed within the kettle or small boiler and the steel keeper plate is placed on the outside of the appliance.
The magnetic field between the magnet and the steel keeper plate is sufficient to hold both magnet and keeper plate firmly in the required position. As the water boils within the vessel the convection currents will ensure that the water passes through the magnetic field.
The apparatus will normally comprise of an arc segment magnet and a steel keeper plate. #dvantageously, the steel keeper plate will be coated or covered in suitable material that can be made into a plurality of decorative motifs or emblems. The device can be fitted to almost any appliance without modification and also where space is at a premium.
The size of arc segment magnet can be varied to suit a particular appliance or application. The invention is described further hereinafter by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig.l. is a general view of a device in accordance with the present invention.
Fig.2. is a cross section through the device of Fig.l.
Fig. 3. is a cross section through the device of Fig.2.
in direction of arrow 4.
Fis.4. is a cross section of the device attached to curved surface.
Fits.5. is a cross section of the device showing the steel keeper plate 3 in direct contact with side of vessel 2.
The device illustrated in the drawings is comprised of a radially magnetised arc segment permanent magnet and steel keeper plate, or a magnet having similar properties with the poles as shown in Fig.4. (N indicates the North Pole and S indicates the South Pole.) The polarity is unimportant. As shown in Fig.2., Fig.3.and Fig.4., the steel keeper plate 3, will be coated or covered in suitable material 4. Alternativelyw the steel keeper plate 3 can be electro plated. firc segment magnet 1 is placed in the water container below water level against the surface of the container 2.
Steel keeper plate 3, whether it be it be moulded in plastic or metal plated is placed against surface of container 2. The bringing together of arc segment magnet 1 and steel keeper plate 3 holds both components firmly in position.

Claims (6)

1. A device for inhibiting the formation of scale on surfaces contacted by water. The device comprises of a single arc or semi-circular ferrite magnet that is radially magnetised, it is placed within the vessel or container holding the water.
The magnet is held in place at the side of the vessel by the strong magnetic field completed by a steel keeper plate placed on the outside of the vessel.
2. A device according to Claim 1 that allows the water boiling within the vessel to circulate naturally and continually pass through the magnetic field.
3 A device according to Claim 1 has a keeper plate that is suitably protected against corrosion by metal coating or plastic decorative coating
4. A device according to Claim 1 and Claim 2 that has sufficient magnetic strength to hold the two components in the required position in most kettles, waterboilers etc., without resorting to other forms of mechanical fixing.
5. A device for inhibiting the formation of scale on surfaces contacted by water substantially as herein described with reference to accompanying drawings
6. A water conditioning system incorporating a device as claimed in any of the preceding claims.
