Abstract

In response to detection of an abnormal engine operating condition, e.g. excessive temperature and/or low oil pressure or level or water level, a visual and/or audible alarm is actuated and, after a delay the engine is stopped, e.g. by interrupting the ignition or fuel.

Description

An engine protector.
This device relates to a device to protect an engine from dainage in the case of an error condition.
In many engines that generate heat they are cooled by turning on a fan or by a water jacket cooling the cylinders. In the situation where there is a loss of water or failure of the fan and the user ignores any warning from the engine or such, y there is the very real possibility that damage major or minor could result. To forestall this damage happening the device described will cause a controlled shutdown of the engine. To allow the user to get to a safer position in order to minimize danger to the user and the engine there is a short time delay before total shutdown. This has obvious implications for any other conditions that need to be monitored.
The invention consists of: A method of detecting an erroneous condition.
A method of warning the user.
A method of instigating a controlled shutdown of the engine.
A method of timing the shutdown.
A method of warning the user.
Description.
An example of the invention consists of: A bimetallic temperature switch (1) to detect the excess temperature found in the engine as shown in figure 1. When this switch opens due to the excess temperature this causes a warning to be issued to the user (2) at the same time causes the relay to open after a due time delay (3). Upon opening of the relay this will disable the engine from running by interrupting the ignition or fuel or such.
Another example of this invention could be: A pressure sensor in the oil feed to detect low oil pressure. At start up of the engine this sensor would be overridden until the engine was moving at sufficient velocity to create oil pressure.
After this time period then the oil pressure would be sampled, if there was insufficient pressure then there will be a warning issued and controlled shutdown begun.
Another example of this invention could be: A level sensor in the oil or water could detect low levels on either of these essential fluids and again cause a controlled shutdown of the engine.
